Mission Graduates is a nonprofit organization that increases the number of K-12 students in San Franciscos Mission District who are prepared for and complete a college education. We work towards fulfilling our mission through a wide range of after-school support services that serve over 3,400 children, youth, and families each year. Our vision is to transform the culture of our neighborhood so that college becomes the expectation for Mission families, rather than the exception.

For the last 12 years, College Connect has been ensuring that Mission District high school youth prepare for, apply to, and succeed in universities and four-year colleges. The program follows students from junior year in high school through to college graduation.

Reports To: High School Program Coordinator

Position Overview

The College Access Assistant position requires a self-motivated individual who is familiar with the Mission/ Excelsior communities, is bilingual in Spanish, and has a passion for working with youth. This is a great opportunity for someone who believes Higher Education as a means to break cycles of poverty, everyone should have the right to a higher education, and who wants to gain experience working with youth and their families in the Mission/ Excelsior communities. Additionally, the College Access Assistant will gain knowledge of college access and success programming and building community with students and their families. The College Access Assistant will work closely with the College Connect High School Program Coordinator to mainly support high school students but will also support the rising college freshmen and current college students in our program when needed.

The College Access Assistant weekly work schedule is typically 10-6pm or 11-7pm and some weekend required.

Key Responsibilities & Primary Duties

Direct Service (50%)

    • Coordinate and/or lead student workshops, mentoring activities, and other special activities.
    • Assist students to complete FAFSA/ Dream Act applications
    • Provide resources for students who demonstrate needs for emotional and academic support.
    • Assist Program Coordinators during program meetings, workshops and events
    • Build cultural and educational bridges with students and their families.
    • Intentional relationship building with youth, parents, and community partners
    • Assist in collecting and contacting students when CC Application information is missing
    • Assist in transcript reviews to ensure students are A-G eligible & recommend summer school when needed. Research summer enrichment opportunities.
    • Assist in scheduling volunteers and current/ alumni CC students to participate in student interviews Assist in making phone call interviews to incoming cohorts guardians
    • Assist in student interviews for the new cohort
Administrative (50%)
    • Send reminder emails/calls/text messages to students about upcoming deadlines, meetings, activities, scholarships, etc.
    • Assist in communicating with and scheduling volunteers and interpreters when needed
    • Assist in drafting blog and newsletter stories for the program
    • Assist with program data tracking spreadsheets, collect student grades and financial aid information
    • Data entry of new student information into SalesForce and other tracking spreadsheets
    • Assist with new student orientation, logistics, etc
    • Assist Program Coordinator during program meetings, workshops, and events
    • Help prepare for monthly meetings (buy food, photocopy materials, set up meeting space)
    • Help prepare agenda and materials for workshops and program events
    • Help translate documents when needed
    • Assist with interpretation and facilitation of program meetings when applicable
Required Qualifications
    • Bilingual Spanish/English required
    • Familiarity with college access challenges that are specific to first-generation college students
    • Proven ability to work with people from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic, educational, religious, sexual orientation backgrounds
    • Familiarity with Google Drive, Google Forms, and Excel programs
    • Availability to work weekends when required
    • Fingerprint and TB test clearance mandatory prior to internship
