Summary:
The Director, Corporate Compliance and Privacy is responsible for overseeing the corporate compliance program for UNC Health Wayne. Functioning as an objective reviewer and evaluator of compliance issues and concerns, the Director, Corporate Compliance and Privacy investigates and reviews activities for the purpose of supporting regulatory compliance. This position works to evaluate, analyze, and assess the risks associated with business processes including coding and billing, work plans, regulations and policies. Assures that all practices, procedures, and polices are in compliance with regulatory standards.

Responsibilities:
1. Ensures that the compliance program is developed to meet the expectations of the hospital and conforms to professional and regulatory standards. Identifies areas for inclusion in the annual audit plan. Maintains current and relevant expertise in key functional areas related to hospital compliance.
2. Works collaboratively with hospital functions regarding potential risks, issues or concerns including, but not limited to, Patient Accounting, Health Information Management, Quality and Risk, Information Technology and Legal. Works with other system functions (UNC HCS Internal Audit, Privacy, Compliance, Legal, Information Services Division, etc.).
3. Identifies potential areas of compliance vulnerability and risk; develops and implements corrective action plans for resolution of problematic issues and provides general guidance or training on how to prevent similar situations from reoccurring. Develop strategies for management of serious adverse events.
4. Facilitates audits, furnishes the findings, analysis, recommendations, counsel and information to appropriate parties. Effectively coordinates the completion of functional management's response and plan of action regarding issue resolution.
5. Establishes and administers the patient privacy and confidentiality policies, procedures, and practices. Works with Privacy Health Information Management and Information Services Division in educating teammates on these policies, procedures, and practices. Provides guidance to leadership and teammates regarding privacy issues and concerns. Investigates patient privacy and/or confidentiality breaches or complaints. Makes recommendations to leadership.
6. Collaborates with other departments to direct compliance issues to appropriate channels for investigation and resolution. Consults with corporate attorney or other resources as needed to resolve difficult legal compliance issues.
7. Oversees and works with other leaders to achieve successful compliance and privacy training for teammates and providers. Provides ad hoc training as needed or due to changes in regulations.
8. Institutes and maintains an effective compliance communication program for the organization, including promoting the use of the Compliance Hotline, a heightened awareness of the Code of Conduct, and an understanding of new and existing compliance issues and related policies and procedures.
9. Periodically reevaluates the control environment to adjust for internal changes, emerging issues and external developments. Provides a balanced coverage to all organizational segments based on priorities identified in the risk assessment and audit plan. Develops and leads education programs that support compliance with policies, regulations, and sound business principles.
10. Presents executive summaries of audit and review results along with corrective action taken to Executive Offices (i.e. CEO, COO, and CFO) within UNC Health Wayne, and to the Board or other delegated Board Committee.
11. Assists with determining resource utilization needs and responsibility for budget development and monitoring resulting variances.
12. Manages own time and resources to perform the required duties of the function in an efficient and effective manner, and in accordance with applicable professional standards.
13. Maintains or acquires certifications and/or memberships necessary to stay current on matters of compliance and healthcare related regulations in order to provide professional services in an effective and efficient process.
14. Communicates in a professional, clear and precise manner with all levels of professional staff including physicians.
15. Reports privacy breaches to appropriate parties based on breach analysis within required reporting timeframes.
16. Participates in the development, implementation, and ongoing compliance monitoring of all business associate agreements to ensure that all privacy concerns, requirements and responsibilities are addressed.

Bachelor's degree in appropriate field required; Master's Degree Preferred.

Licensure/Certification
CHC required, CHPC preferred.

Experience
The position requires 5 years' experience in compliance or related functionality in an acute care hospital.
