Position Summary

The individual in this role will be responsible for leading the technical team within the Plant Engineering Department. This includes managing engineering systems that support the facility's operations, such as Boilers, Chillers, Generators, Air Handling Units (AHUs), Compressors, Heat Exchangers, Medical Gas Pumps, Automatic Transfer Switches (ATSs), and Fire Alarm Systems.

The role encompasses ownership of utilities distribution, energy management, and the maintenance and repair of engineering systems for UNC Health Care, along with overseeing the building engineering team involved in these functions.

Additionally, the position requires providing expertise in the automation, computerization, and monitoring of facility systems and equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee and coordinate Plant Engineering activities to minimize disruptions within the healthcare environment.
  • Manage staffing and scheduling for the engineering team.
  • Provide technical expertise and supervision for all building systems related to the operation and maintenance of the central energy plant and utility systems.
  • Act as the technical lead for the Building Automation System (BAS), fire alarm system, and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Utilize computer-aided drafting (CAD) tools and ensure the maintenance of accurate electronic drawings of facilities.
  • Collaborate with the Plant Engineering Director to serve as a technical resource for the operation, maintenance, and repair of various facility systems.
  • Prepare Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for necessary systems and equipment.
  • Deliver regular reports to the Plant Engineering Director regarding maintenance completion rates and significant trends.
  • Optimize utility consumption through effective application of building automation systems.
  • Develop and implement inspection, testing, and maintenance plans for building systems.
  • Ensure compliance with preventive maintenance programs through oversight of testing and inspections.
  • Support the Director in establishing capital improvement priorities and budget forecasts for facility repairs and upgrades.
  • Maintain a digital database of CAD drawings, focusing on as-built documentation and updates.
  • Address customer concerns and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Stay informed on trends and advancements in facilities management and related technologies.
  • Conduct interviews, hire candidates, and provide coaching and performance evaluations for team members.
  • Ensure productivity standards are met and align team goals with organizational objectives.
  • Facilitate communication of project priorities and departmental goals to the engineering team.
Qualifications

Education: An Associate's degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Construction Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is required. A Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Certified Healthcare Facility Manager or Certified Healthcare Constructor certification is preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in managing plant operations systems is required, with at least two years in a supervisory role preferred. Experience in a healthcare setting is strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of building automation systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) is essential.
  • Familiarity with computer-aided drafting (CAD) systems is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, including professionalism, communication skills, and the ability to motivate others.
  • Proficient in English communication, both written and verbal.
  • Competent in MS Office applications and quick to learn new software.
