Role Summary:
The Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer is tasked with leading the corporate compliance initiatives for UNC Health Care. Acting as an impartial assessor of compliance matters, this role involves investigating and evaluating activities to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements. The position is responsible for assessing and analyzing risks linked to various business operations, including billing, coding, and adherence to regulations and policies. It is essential to ensure that all practices and procedures align with regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develops a compliance program that meets hospital expectations and adheres to professional and regulatory standards. Identifies key areas for the annual audit plan and maintains expertise in compliance-related functional areas.
2. Collaborates with various hospital departments to address potential risks and issues, including Patient Accounting, Health Information Management, Quality and Risk, Information Technology, and Legal. Engages with system functions such as Internal Audit, Privacy, Compliance, and Information Services.
3. Identifies compliance vulnerabilities and risks; formulates and implements corrective action plans to resolve issues and provides training to prevent recurrence. Develops strategies for managing serious adverse events.
4. Facilitates audits, providing findings, analyses, recommendations, and counsel to relevant parties. Coordinates responses and action plans from functional management regarding issue resolution.
5. Establishes and oversees patient privacy and confidentiality policies, ensuring staff are educated on these protocols. Provides guidance on privacy concerns and investigates breaches or complaints, making recommendations to leadership.
6. Works with other departments to direct compliance issues to the appropriate channels for investigation and resolution, consulting with legal resources as necessary.
7. Oversees compliance and privacy training for staff and providers, offering additional training as regulations change.
8. Implements an effective compliance communication strategy, promoting the Compliance Hotline and enhancing awareness of the Code of Conduct and compliance policies.
9. Regularly reevaluates the control environment to adapt to internal changes and emerging issues, ensuring balanced coverage across organizational segments based on risk assessments.
10. Presents summaries of audit results and corrective actions to executive leadership and the Board.
11. Assists in determining resource needs and managing budget development and monitoring.
12. Efficiently manages time and resources to fulfill job responsibilities in line with professional standards.
13. Maintains necessary certifications and memberships to stay updated on compliance and healthcare regulations.
14. Communicates professionally and clearly with all levels of staff, including physicians.
15. Reports privacy breaches in accordance with required timeframes.
16. Participates in the development and monitoring of business associate agreements to ensure all privacy concerns are addressed.
Additional Information:
Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required; Master's degree preferred.
Licensure/Certification: CHC required, CHPC preferred.
Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in compliance or related functions within an acute care hospital is required.
