Job Description

Job title Tool & Die 10 Journeyman Reports to Tool & Die Supervisor

Job Summary

This Journeyman position provides the skills to do construction and maintenance on sheet metal tooling, fixtures, and gauging. The deliverable is a high level of safety and quality in regards to banking and forming dies for sheet metal production.

Essential Functions
  • Ability to work overtime hours as needed which may require a 9 or 10 hour working day and an occasional Saturday
  • Ability to do setup and operation of mills, lathes, saws, grinders, drills and other related tool and die equipment.
  • Ability to setup and operate the CNC Vertical Machining Center
  • Ability to read precise measuring equipment (micrometers, dial calipers, indicators, gauges) with tight tolerances.
  • Ability to determine which tool steels for various projects
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision
  • Must have good trouble-shooting abilities
  • Must be able to communicate with production personnel regarding tooling performance issues
  • Ability to purchase a wide variety of hand tools and measuring tools to use on the job
  • Ability to understand and utilize the heat treating process
  • Responsible to log work done on dies and molds
  • Ability to meet specific deadlines on projects
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Participates in the department 5S program
  • Other marginal duties as assigned by Supervisor
  • Must be able to perform all physical requirements
Minimum Required Qualifications

Education: High school degree or GED or equivalent factory experience

Experience: Candidate must possess the following: Prior factory or Tool & Die experience required
  • This position requires a strong focus on safety.
  • Knowledge of the OSHA standards that relate to Tool & Die (lockout / Tagout, Machine Guarding, etc.)
  • Ability to read, write, and do basic math in English
  • Ability to read and understand advanced prints
  • Must have a good mechanical aptitude
  • Completion off the 8000 hours on the job training and the designated Ivy Tech curriculum per the CTB Tool & Die Apprenticeship Program or equivalent experience
  • Ability to pay attention to detail
  • Forklift license and overhead crane license required
  • Must be able to carry out detailed written or oral instruction
Working conditions
  • Works in manufacturing environment that can be hot, noisy, oily/grease and dusty at times.
  • PPE required (such as long pants and shirts, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection, gloves)
  • Ability to work around moving mechanical equipment
  • Willing to work with cleaning solvents and degreasers

  • Occasional grasping
  • Frequent reaching/stretching
  • Occasional sliding (push or pull) of heavy dies
  • Occasional lifting 30 to 70 lbs.
