We discover, collect, preserve, interpret, and present artifacts and exhibits that showcase the stories of Indiana's natural and cultural history, art, and science.

About the Vincennes State Historic Sites: Founded in 1732 by France, Vincennes is Indiana’s oldest city. Vincennes changed hands from France to Great Britain, and ultimately America following the Revolutionary War. In 1800, Congress created the Indiana Territory and named Vincennes its capital. The new territory was much larger than the State of Indiana today, including what is now Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and part of Minnesota. Vincennes served as a focal point where important decisions would influence the future of the entire Midwest. This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $58,710. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Role Overview: The Site Manager oversees all facets of site management. You will provide, or guide others, in operations, programming, and community outreach. Each historic site in the ISMHS system has responsibilities that are specific to an individual site. The ideal candidate will have management experience in a visitor-centric environment such as museums, science centers, historic sites, or cultural centers. A Day in the Life:

Programming: Assist programming staff in developing and implementing programs, tours, and interpretations. Serve as the expert and resource person for historic aspects of the site. Follow the American Association of Museums (AAM) standards for the care and accountability of historic artifacts and specimens. Evaluate and improve the visitor experience. Resolve visitor issues or complaints. Identify and collaborate with ISMHS historic preservation and facilities staff about necessary restoration, repair, or construction needs. Work with the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and Indiana Department of Environmental Management as needed regarding site issues.

Community Outreach: Identify and form relationships with community members, legislators, and organizations to form collaborations and partnerships. Attend and participate in targeted community events. Work with the ISMHS Development staff to identify and implement grants, corporate sponsorship, and supplemental support. Meet with media and make presentations to keep the community informed about the site. Work with the Knox County Tourism staff to enhance site promotion. What You'll Need for Success:

Community partnering and communication skills are essential to the success of this position and this site. Detailed attention to daily operations including visitor experience, site cleanliness, and regular property checks. Ability to think big picture – both operationally and strategically – at a time when the site is poised to undergo some large historic preservation projects with the potential for impact on the daily visitor experience. Have a strong working knowledge of institutional system-wide procedures pertaining to fiscal control, purchasing, and personnel management. Have strong interpersonal and intrapersonal skills and the ability to solve problems and negotiate.
