Description

Summary

The Director of Infection Prevention and Clinical Education is responsible for the day-to-day operations and services of infection control, and ongoing education of Boone Memorial Health.

Infection Prevention:
The IP is the key person responsible for dissemination of infection prevention information, including surveillance data and policy decisions. The IP should have a working familiarity of the IP position description and should make recommendations to administration for revisions as the profession evolves.
Responsible for oversight of infection prevention measures to control healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs) by isolating sources of infections and limiting their spread; systematically collects, analyzes and interprets health data in order to plan, implement, evaluate and disseminate appropriate public health practices; and trains healthcare staff through instruction and dissemination of information on infection control practices.

Clinical Education
The Director of Clinical Education is responsible for the initial and ongoing education of Boone Memorial Health's clinical staff. As a motivated and dedicated teacher, the Clinical Educator will design curricula, teach and guide employees in their learning endeavors and stay up-to-date with the latest in-patient care and hospital/clinic regulation. The Educator will collaborate with medical practitioners to incorporate nursing processes into the plan of care for a specialized group of patients. Coordinates specialty training for nursing and support services to patients as required, ensuring adherence to Joint Commission standards and all related policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Infection Prevention:
  • Effectively direct, manage and operate infection prevention and control/epidemiology
  • Educate hospital personnel and consult with the organization, CDC, and the county and state health departments.
  • Perform outbreak investigations
  • Performs surveillance activities as directed by the Infection Control Committee.
  • Reports to the Health Department and other regulatory agencies as required.
  • Reviews and revises IC policies and protocols to maintain standard and practice compliance.
  • Performs inspection rounds in all areas of the hospital and clinics to monitor
compliance.
  • Prepares summary of IC data for committees and studies.
  • Facilitates organization wide Infection Prevention and Control Program.
  • Take steps to prevent or control the acquisition and transmission of identified infectious agents.
  • Facilitate National Patient Safety Goal: Facilitate good hand hygiene practices.
  • Referring or receiving organization when a patient was transferred or referred and the presence of an infection was not known at the time of transfer or referral.
  • Maintain or improve upon systems for investigation of outbreaks of infectious diseases.
  • A description of prioritized risks
  • A statement of the goals of the IC program
  • A description of the hospital's strategies to minimize, reduce, or eliminate the prioritized risks.
  • A description of how the strategies will be evaluated.
  • Identify risks for the transmission and acquisition of infectious agents throughout the hospital based on: geographic location and community environment of the hospital, program/service provided, and the characteristics of the population served. Consider the results of the analysis of the hospital's infection and prevention and control data, and the care, treatment and services provided.
  • Formally review risk analysis annually and whenever significant changes occur in any of the above factors.
  • Identify infection prevention and control risks through surveillance activities, including data collection and analysis as it pertains to: Patients, licensed practitioners, staff, volunteers, and student/trainees, visitors and families.
  • Establish priorities and goals related to preventing the acquisition and transmission of potentially infectious agents. These goals include but are not limited to: Limiting unprotected exposure to pathogens throughout the hospital, enhancing hand hygiene, minimizing the risk of transmitting infections associated with the use of procedures, medical equipment and medical devices.
  • Develop interventions using guidelines from CDC, Healthcare Infection Control
Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC), Association for Professionals in Infection Control (APIC), and the National Quality Forum (NQF) and other relevant sources.
  • Interventions are implemented to determine: appropriate storage, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and/or disposal of supplies and equipment, proper re-use of equipment, the appropriate use of personal protective equipment, medical equipment, fixed and portable equipment used for the diagnosis and treatment, monitoring, and direct care of an individual.
  • Implement applicable precautions as appropriate based on: the potential for transmission, mechanism of transmission, the care, treatment and service setting, the emergence and reemergence of pathogens in the community that could affect the hospital.
  • Participate in programs to facilitate Influenza vaccination of staff, licensed practitioners, and volunteers.
Clinical Education:
  • Mentoring and teaching current and future employees
  • Designing, delivering and evaluating education curricula
  • Reviewing and adapting current education material annually and as needed
  • Maintaining documentation of education activities with Paycom Learning and submitting attendance/completion to the Human Resources Department to be placed in the employee's personnel file.
  • Researching and remaining up-to-date on clinical practices and guidelines
  • Maintaining and adapting materials for New Employee Orientation as needed
  • Providing annual competencies for all nursing staff, MA's, CNA's employed by Boone Memorial Hospital.
  • Providing training classes for certifications and re-certification of BLS, ACLS and PALS as indicated
  • Maintain and update Paycom Learning and Lippincott module for mandatory annual employee competencies.
  • Maintaining current certifications with the desire to obtain additional certifications as the need arises
  • Maintain educational program and keep certification up to date. Including but not limited to Preceptor on Demand, Handle with Care required Clinical Competencies,etc.
  • Work closely with all departments of the hospital to determine needs for the education of Boone Memorial Hospital's employees.
  • Assists CMO with planning the Provider Skills Day
  • Working flexible hours including on call hours for training.

  • Must be currently certified with Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
