**Responsibilities**:

1. Performs labor relating to the maintenance of roadside, right-of-way, and Rest Area facilities.
- Currently holds and maintains an Illinois Department of Agriculture applicator license for General Standards and Right-of-Way for the duration of the position.
- Applies herbicides and pesticides to state right-of-way.
- Applies seed, fertilizer, and erosion control materials to establish vegetation on rights-of
- way and rest areas to enhance and retain desirable turf.
- Cuts grass, weeds, plants and/or cares for trees, bushes and flowers as directed.
- Performs controlled burns as allowed by law.
- Performs plumbing, heating, and electrical work along with the continuous upkeep of sewage lagoons and lift stations.
- Performs construction repairs at state facilities, including, but not limited to carpentry, parking lot repairs, curb repair, fences, sign repair.

2. In the performance of duties, operates CDL Class "A" licensed vehicles and other equipment including maintenance trucks and bucket trucks (up to 60 ft. above the ground); brush chippers, stump grinders, mowers, chain saws, green climber, tractors, loaders, trailers, weed whips and pole pruners.
- Washes, greases, and conducts minor repairs and preventative maintenance activities of these vehicles and equipment.
- Performs work from ladders.

3. Operates tree spade and seeding planter to install trees, shrubs, and prairie plants on rights-of-way.
- Operates large chain saws to remove large trees which are storm damaged, dead, dying or diseased.
- Operates and works from bucket trucks at heights up to 60 feet for various tasks related to rest area and roadside maintenance.

4. During snow and ice conditions, operates snowplows and spreads salt and sand.
- Plows and removes snow.
- Responds to emergency weather situations, as instructed verbally or in writing, to inspect roadways and remove hazardous material/obstacles, some weighing up to 50 pounds, from roadways and drainage areas.

5. Constructs picnic tables and related items for rest areas.

6. Maintains on-the-job records including timekeeping, planting, spraying, and other required documentation.
- Performs routine housekeeping duties associated with the general care of facilities and grounds.

7. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

**Minimum Qualifications**:

- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school.
- Requires possession of a Class “A” CDL with appropriate endorsements, to include X or N and no airbrake restrictions.
- For seasonal employees only, possession of a Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements, to include X or N and no airbrake restrictions, is acceptable for a period of two years. At the beginning of the third year from the initial hire date, a seasonal employee must possess a Class A CDL.
