**Responsibilities**:
This position is accountable for supporting the Traffic Operations Engineer in accomplishing the field functions of the Bureau of Operations’ Traffic Section which includes development and implementation of programs for the installation, operation, and maintenance of traffic control devices.

This position reports directly to the Traffic Operations Engineer. No subordinate personnel report to this position.

Typical problems include conducting sign surveys, often within a limited time frame. While performing these functions, the incumbent may encounter changes to policy or law which require major signing changes, or emergency situations which would require which require immediate road closures and detours, relying on the incumbent’s initiative and comprehensive knowledge. The greatest challenge for this position is to establish and maintain proper signing and pavement markings throughout the entire district.

**Job Responsibilities (continued)**:
This position has a vast number of separate duties which all adjoin to make a safe, efficient, and convenient roadway marking system. The incumbent is responsible for conducting sign surveys on 4057 lane miles of highways under the jurisdiction of District 2 to ensure the signing and pavement marking is in compliance with the adopted National and Illinois Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. The Temporary Traffic Operations Supervisor and the Traffic Operations Engineer assist this person in doing these reviews and write work orders for down signs and routine maintenance of traffic signs. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining an up-to-date inventory of all district’s signing, as well as other traffic control devices. The incumbent reviews signing and striping in plans being developed and may provide guidance to designers. The incumbent performs signing and striping reviews during construction to ensure that work is installed to Standards and Policies. The incumbent plans and may supervise the execution of special projects; makes field reviews and prepares work orders for the establishment of road closures and detours for emergencies or Day Labor projects; and establishes and checks “No Passing Zones” and maintains a record of all zones in the district. The incumbent also handles various district-wide signing programs such as the TODS Program and signing for the Adopt-A-Highway Program.

The incumbent is given the freedom to write work orders and prioritize general assignments. In response to outside requests and complaints, they make field reviews and personal contacts and provides the Traffic Operations Engineer with recommended action and suggested correspondence.
