**Environmental Health & Safety Inspector - Nacogdoches County**

**General Description**:
The Environmental Health & Safety Inspector is responsible for maintaining health standards for On-Site Sewage Facilities in Nacogdoches County. The Inspector manages all services and activities to ensure compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to On-Site Sewage Facilities (OSSF); issues permits, performs inspections and investigates complaints. This position is required to maintain certification as a TCEQ OSSF Designated Representative (DR) for Nacogdoches County including initial and continuing education necessary to maintain certification. The incumbent serves as a representative of Nacogdoches County in the investigation of environmental health concerns, illegal dumping and nuisance abatement in unincorporated areas of the County. In addition, this position acts as the County’s internal Safety Committee Chairman and assists with Emergency Management Operations during declared disasters.

**Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities**:

- Ability to obtain and maintain certification as an OSSF Designated Representative (DR) for Nacogdoches County, including initial and continuing education necessary to maintain designation
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations relating to health and environmental standards, on-site sewage systems, building codes and safety standards
- Knowledge of and ability to recognize proper on-site sewage facilities for determined use, soil type and property layout
- Knowledge of workplace safety programs and hazard identification
- Ability to effectively deal with personal danger which may include exposure to fumes, smoke, electrical hazards, confined or high work places, slippery and uneven surfaces, extremely loud noises and strong odors
- Ability to interact effectively and professionally with the public and other county departments
- Ability to adapt to changing work situations, and remain objective in dealing with upset, emotional individuals in difficult or challenging situations
- Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with co-workers, county officials, representatives from other public agencies and vendors
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to function effectively in emergency situations
- Skill in the use of modern office procedures, methods and equipment, including computers
- Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

**Work Environment**:

- Work will be performed indoors and outdoors and may encounter all types of adverse weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, rain, sleet, snow, dust and smoke, loud noises and unpleasant odors
- Frequent contact with the public, including upset or irate individuals
- Walking in wooded and overgrown areas
- Exposure to bio-hazards or environmentally hazardous waste
- Exposure to animals, both wild and domestic
- Regular travel to other locations in the county in all types of weather conditions
- Occasional travel outside the county for training and/or seminars in all types of weather conditions which may include weekends or evenings
- May be on call for emergency situations outside of regular working hours

- Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time
- Ability to frequently bend, kneel, reach, pull, push, climb and crawl
- Use of fingers and hands to touch, feel and handle and arms to reach
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to walk up and down hill and in wooded and overgrown areas for extended distances
- Ability to walk around construction sites with heavy equipment and ground hazards
- Ability to walking through grass, brush, mud and vines
- Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations and communicating with others; requires sufficient vision to see both up close and at a distance
- Requires ability to maintain mental capacity which permits sound decision making

**Required Qualifications**:

- Two years of environmental health or related experience
- Valid Texas Driver’s License
- TCEQ certification as an OSSF Designated Representative or the ability to become certified within 90 days from date of hire

Pay: $47,101.00 - $48,934.00 per year
