THIS IS A PART-TIME GRANT FUNDED POSITION (35 HOURS PER WEEK)

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Technician 1 assists in a wide range of cell culture and animal experiments and ongoing research project focused on gastrointestinal research in the Physiology department at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs basic research techniques such as RNA samples and runs PCR under close supervision.

2. Performs biochemical assays such as plasma LPS, AST/ALT, and cytokines by ELISA under close supervision.

3. Handles and maintains mice, harvesting intestinal tissues under close supervision.

4. Conducts experiments in the cultured cell monolayers in transwells.

5. Undergoes training to perform cell culture techniques to maintain epithelial cells.

6. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: Two (2) years of college coursework in science and one (1) year of clinical research experience; OR two (2) years of laboratory experience at the Research Technician level. (Education in areas relevant to medical science is preferred.)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

* Ability to handle animal tissues.
* Knowledge in the area of animal tissue harvesting.
* Experience in biochemical and molecular assays.
* Hygienic techniques to help maintain cell cultures.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may occasionally be required to work weekends.
