Work Hours: 19 hours or less a week

The On-Call Juvenile Detention Officer position requires availability to work on an as-needed basis, often with short notice. As part of our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of juveniles in our care, On-Call Officers must be prepared to respond promptly to requests for assistance from the detention facility. On-Call Officers are vital members of our team, providing essential coverage during critical times to ensure the smooth operation of the facility and the well-being of the juveniles under our supervision. Flexibility, reliability, and readiness to respond to duty calls are key attributes we seek in candidates for this position.

GENERAL PURPOSE

Perform a variety of entry-level technical duties to provide for the security, supervision and safety of juveniles assigned to the Detention Center.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work under the general supervision of the Juvenile Detention Center Director, Supervisor or Sergeant.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Supervise the activities of juveniles assigned to the Detention Center to ensure compliance with established policies, procedures and regulations; maintain security and discipline; provide for the safety and welfare of residents; monitor and control access of residents and visitors into and within the facility through the use of video monitors and operation of electronic doors.

Process residents into and out of the facility; take photographs and obtain fingerprints; provide for security of valuables in accordance with policy; establish a file for each resident and maintains detailed records of activities in accordance with established policies and procedures; prepare and submit a variety of administrative records and reports including reports of bookings, releases, incidents, disciplinary procedures and actions, counseling and other activities as required; computer enters resident information.

Conduct orientation of new residents; provide individual counseling to residents; observe residents for proper adjustment; counsel residents concerning personal hygiene; provide or obtain medical aid including first aid or CPR for residents when necessary; administer prescribed medications; provide for and supervise regular exercise and recreation periods; transport residents for medical services and court appearances and provide security while they are outside the facility; and conduct regular fire drills.

Make rounds and observe conduct and behavior of residents; assess level of resident threat to self and others; inspect locks, window bars, grills, doors and gates for proper operation or tampering; conduct searches of inmates and facility for contraband; investigate inmate complaints; take necessary actions to prevent disturbances or escapes; may use force when necessary to maintain discipline and order among residents in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures.

Supervise residents assigned to work details within the facility; perform routine maintenance and cleaning of facilities and assist with preparation and serving of meals to residents; supervise and assist residents while performing school education services.

Perform comprehensive janitorial maintenance of the facility; perform general repair work, painting, buffing floors, sanding and painting rooms, snow removal, etc.; launder clothing; conduct inventory of facility supplies as needed.

Bonneville County has an expectation that employees maintain regular, reliable patterns in their work product and attendance.

Perform other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Education and Experience

A. Graduation from high school;

AND

B. Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience working with youth;

OR

C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Some knowledge of proper methods of care and management of delinquent and dependent children; juvenile detention regulations, practices and procedures; basic security methods and procedures; judicial system and legal processes; basic counseling and discipline methods and procedures; and youth educational programs processes.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; read, interpret and apply complex written policies, procedures; laws, and regulations governing the operation of juvenile detention facilities; ability to understand and follow detailed verbal instructions; establish and maintain working relationships with residents from culturally diverse groups and their families; prepare and maintain detailed and accurate records; operate video equipment, computer terminals and electronic locks; restrain physically violent residents; and react quickly and appropriately to unusual or unexpected situations under conditions of stress.

3. Special Qualifications:

Must possess a valid Idaho State Drivers License.

Must be 21 years of age.

Must be willing to work rotating shifts and be available on call.

Must not have any significant criminal record as confirmed by NCIC check.

Must be able to meet physical fitness requirements.

Must become POST certified as a corrections officer.

4. Work Environment:

Functions of the position generally performed in a controlled environment, but subject to occasional travel. Many functions of the work pose high degree of hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning may be a factor for job retention. Various tasks require physical abilities including walking, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting, seeing, speaking and using physical force to defend or restrain others. Normal hand and eye coordination and dexterity are required for writing and typing and operation of equipment. Various tasks require mental application including memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, creative problem solving.
