Job Overview:
The South Dakota State Government is seeking a dedicated professional to serve as a Juvenile Justice Specialist within the Department of Corrections, Juvenile Division. This is a Full-Time position requiring 40 hours per week.

Salary: $27.49 to $34.36 per hour, based on experience.

Role Summary:
As a Juvenile Justice Specialist, you will play a crucial role in enhancing the lives of youth involved in the justice system. You will collaborate with a team of professionals committed to supporting young individuals and their families. The position offers professional development opportunities to help you achieve both organizational and personal career objectives.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as a liaison to the Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention regarding the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA) and manage federal title II formula grants.
  • Facilitate a collaborative learning environment to enhance staff skills in delivering interventions that promote positive behavioral changes in youth.
  • Serve as the PREA compliance manager, working with contractors to gather monthly statistics on PREA incidents to ensure compliance with federal standards.
  • Oversee the eligibility process for youth accessing psychiatric residential facilities, including representation on inter-Agency review teams.
  • Coordinate meetings, set agendas, and act as a liaison among various agencies involved in program development and service delivery.
  • Support the director with Agency database functions to ensure data integrity, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Organize training events and participate in various workgroups and special projects to assist the department in achieving its objectives.
Ideal Candidate Profile:
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services or a related field is preferred.
Knowledge Requirements:
  • Familiarity with federal and state laws, rules, and regulations relevant to juvenile justice.
  • Understanding of department policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in juvenile justice.
  • Awareness of adolescent development and the effects of trauma on behavior.
  • Insight into program development principles and implementation science.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to interpret Agency goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
  • Competence in presenting and promoting departmental priorities and services.
  • Proficiency in gathering, interpreting, and reporting information related to assigned activities.
  • Capability to assess program effectiveness and recommend necessary changes.
  • Experience in training and guiding staff and service users.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
