About EarthGrid

EarthGrid, a public benefit corporation, is solving the biggest problem holding back solar & wind power: upgrading our antiquated electric grid. We’re using plasma tech to bore an underground SuperGrid tunnel network for clean power transmission, Broadband fiber for everyone including underserved communities, clean water, and rapid movement of people, goods & freight…all underground.

Our plasma tech enables this up to 100x faster and 10x cheaper. We’ll own the tunnels (think of us like an underground real estate company) and lease out space to e-commerce delivery robot fleets, utilities, telecom & data providers, etc. We intend to become the largest owners of underground real estate in the world, and build a trillion-dollar company that democratizes utilities and other infrastructure.

Our plasma Tunnel Boring Robot (TBR) uses no fossil fuels (electricity & air are the only inputs), lines the tunnel with concrete/shotcrete that absorbs CO2 from the air (carbon-negative), runs on solar/wind power, uses little to no water in the process, and uses no chemicals, lubricants, or drilling mud, keeping our groundwater free of toxic contaminants.

Role - What you’ll do

At EarthGrid, we are at the forefront of innovation, developing a Tunnel Boring Robot (TBR) equipped with high-temperature plasma torches. It’ll be your responsibility to bring the machine online and keep it running. You’ll be our primary controls engineer for integrating the machine, building controls, automating current manual operations, building out HMIs, and troubleshooting issues. This includes our industrial processes (pumps, piping, compressors), our actuators and advancing mechanisms, and any other controls related items. You’ll play a critical role in bringing our new machines online, keep existing machines operational, and improve those machines so they stay operational. You’ll work closely with the entire engineering team and fabrication team in the course of your responsibilities.

Required skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical, Computer Engineering, or similar
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience, with experience in developing industrial processes, robotics, construction or construction equipment, material handling equipment, large machinery, or similar, in any industry: industrial equipment, mining, tunneling, construction, agriculture, etc.
  • 5+ years experience with Siemens PLCs
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience building, integrating, troubleshooting equipment in the real-world
  • Demonstrated capability to build, test, and iterate on prototypes within a small team setting – you should relish direct involvement in the building process.
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills
  • Self starter with intrinsic motivation with little oversight
  • Able to fill many different roles in a small engineering team

Nice to have skills

  • 10+ years of hands-on or professional experience
  • Preferred experience with geology or mining
  • Preferred experience with tunneling, especially Tunnel Boring Machines

Location

EarthGrid has offices in Richmond, CA. Due to the hands-on nature of this role, it is expected that you will be present at one of our fabrication facilities the majority of the time. Some amount of travel is expected as we deploy our equipment for field testing.

Note: If you feel like you uniquely qualify for this position, find a way to get my attention.
