Job purpose

The general purpose of your job is to keep children who are clients of Home of the Innocents safe at all times and to be respectful of the children and their families as valued customers.

The Residential Treatment & Emergency Services Center nurse is responsible for keeping clients safe at all times while providing medical care in a respectful, discrete manner. Coordinate medical services and provide prescribed medications. Perform initial medical screening, treat as ordered, and obtain prescribed medications. Train, supervise, and audit medication administration. Triage, educate, and ensure continuity of care.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure health needs are continually met (beginning with admission health screening).
  • Triage clients and provide treatment or make referral as necessary. Educate staff to treat and provide necessary medical supplies.
  • Document all medical treatments, triages, assessments as appropriate.
  • Provide PRN medications for clients as prescribed, educate staff in their use.
  • Make ordered changes to medications as prescribed by medical providers and obtain those medications. Dispose of or return unused medications in lawful, appropriate manner, as needed.
  • Develop/assist with protocols as required.
  • Educate specified staff in policy, procedure, practice and documentation of medication administration. Intermittently supervise and audit administration and present requested information to Quality Improvement Committee as required.
  • Educate staff and/or client as appropriate (special medical needs, medication side effects, etc.).
  • Maintain and retain client health records according to procedure.
  • Provide intermittent education to clients based on current need (birth control, STI, hygiene, etc.).
  • Maintain communication and act as liaison with medical providers, staff, pharmacy, client and supervisors as necessary to provide adequate client care s needed. Report significant findings to appropriate departments for follow up, continuity of care and client safety.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client information according to HIPPA standards.
  • Train and supervise relief CKC Program Nurses.
  • Understand and treat clients according to the State Nurse Practice Act.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Candidate must be a graduate of an approved LPN or RN program.
  • Must provide and maintain an active and unencumbered LPN or Rn license to practice in the state of Kentucky.
  • Current CPR/BLS certification is required.
  • Must possess the ability to prioritize tasks and implement completion utilizing critical thinking skills.
  • Must accrue and maintain annual continuing education requirements as required by facility and/or state regulations.
  • Valid driver's license and clear driving record is required.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care.
  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures as well as laws, regulations and guidelines that affect Special Health Clinics.
Working conditions
  • Moves intermittently during working hours.
  • Is involved with clients, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
  • Subject to hostile and emotionally upset clients, family members, personnel, and visitors.
  • Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors.
  • Works beyond normal working hours when necessary.
  • Subject to on call support.
  • Subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc. throughout the day, as well as to reactions from dust, disinfectants, and other air contaminants.
  • Subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB, AIDS and Hepatitis viruses.
  • May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • Subject to call-back during emergency conditions (e.g., severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.).
Physical requirements
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, emotionally unstable or hostile people within the facility.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of clients during emergency situations.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 50 pounds to a minimum height of four feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 100 feet.
  • Must be able to carry supplies and lift small children up to 40 lbs.
