Duration: 12 months w/likely extension


Job Description

Will be a 40 – 45 hour per week role:

  • Expert in WLAN installs. Bringing up new APs. Configuring and adding new Aruba 3810m switches.
  • Must be willing to travel around 2-3 times per week to San Diego sites. A lot of the sites are in downtown San Diego.
  • There will be some after-hours and weekend work (limited amount)
  • 75 sites to be completed towards the middle of 2024, so around 3 per week on average.
  • Occasionally ssisting with some LAN work at Gas sites. That may take up 5-10% of their time. The 2 Projects:
  • Handling WLAN Refresh at multiple San Diego sites
  • Sempra HQ LAN Refresh
    • Replacing ~100 LAN switches at HQ
    • Will entail months of prep-work, and likely a few months of implementation
    • Going from Juniper EX to Aruba 6300

As you continue the search please broaden the criteria:

  • WLAN Experience (Aruba preferred)
  • LAN Experience (Juniper to Aruba preferred). Candidate must be familiar with Aruba AOS and CX platforms.
  • General knowledge of Network Engineering (this is the most critical)

Other Factors:

  • San Diego based as they need to be on-site for site walks, site surveys and cut-overs.
  • They will not physically do any of the installs (power, cabling, switches, etc.)

Job Summary: As a WLAN Engineer specializing in Aruba technologies, you will be responsible for planning, deploying, configuring, maintaining, and troubleshooting wireless networks. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including network architects, IT support, and security personnel, to ensure the seamless operation of wireless infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

  1. Network Design and Deployment:
  • Designing wireless network solutions based on business requirements using Aruba products.
  • Conducting site surveys and analyzing RF data to optimize network performance.
  • Implementing WLAN infrastructure, including access points, controllers, and network management systems.
Configuration and Integration:
  • Configuring Aruba wireless controllers, access points, and related network devices.
  • Integrating WLAN solutions with existing network infrastructure and systems.
  • Implementing security protocols and policies, including authentication and encryption mechanisms.
Performance Monitoring and Optimization:
  • Monitoring network performance, identifying bottlenecks, and implementing solutions to optimize performance.
  • Conducting periodic assessments and making recommendations for network improvements.
  • Troubleshooting network issues and providing timely resolutions.
Documentation and Reporting:
  • Creating and maintaining comprehensive documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and procedures.
  • Generating regular reports on network performance, utilization, and security.
Collaboration and Support:
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to support network-related projects and initiatives.
  • Providing technical expertise and guidance to IT support teams for escalated wireless network issues.
  • Assisting in capacity planning and scalability assessments for WLAN infrastructure.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Proven experience as a WLAN Engineer with a focus on Aruba technologies.
  • Certification in Aruba networking (e.g., Aruba Certified Mobility Professional (ACMP), Aruba Certified Design Professional (ACDP), etc.).
  • In-depth knowledge of wireless protocols, standards (e.g., 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax), and RF principles.
  • Proficiency in configuring and managing Aruba wireless controllers, access points, and network management systems.
  • Strong understanding of network security concepts and experience implementing security measures in WLAN environments.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and the ability to analyze complex network issues.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams
