Under general supervision, oversees the general activities and functions associated with the Toledo ZOOTeen Program. This position will serve as a departmental supervisor in the absence of the Director of Volunteers, Assistant Director of Volunteers, and Volunteer Administrator. Reports to the Director of Volunteers. This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires forty hours per scheduled work week.


Essential Job Functions - Duties will include, but are not limited to monitoring and reporting on the following:

  • Oversee all general activities associated with the Toledo ZOOTeen Program which includes, but is not limited to recruiting, screening, training and orientation, placement and evaluation of current members.
  • Supervising the ZOOTeen Leadership Board, including Officers, Chairs, and other leadership roles
  • Scheduling and attending the ZOOTeen monthly meetings.
  • Onsite supervision of ZOOTeens
  • Develop and refine a network of community partners for ZOOTeen service outreach and to meet specific Zoo needs.
  • Develop policies and procedures relevant to the ZOOTeen Program and serving as a liaison between the ZOOTeen Program and various departments.
  • Serve as a liaison to Communications for special events that may require volunteer support, specifically ZOOTeens.
  • Coordinate the TerraCycle program as a means to engage the ZOOTeen and the Zoo in a mission-value initiative.
  • Oversee all programmatic content related to ZOOTeens, either in cooperation with other departments or independently. This includes content development, training, and evaluation of Activity Carts, Animal Handling, Biofacts, animal science, public speaking, age-appropriate education, and any other areas of ZOOTeen programming
  • Provide opportunities for ZOOTeen Leadership Development to provide valuable life and career skills.
  • Supervise the seasonal department staff, including interviewing, training, evaluating, and supervising daily activities. Coordinate activities of the part time department staff in conjunction with the Asst. Director of Volunteers.
  • Foster communication with ZOOTeens and Parents, including but not limited to Volunteer Department Social Media outlets, including Facebook Groups ZOOTeens/ Parents, as well as our Instagram and Snapchat accounts for same.
  • Lead and mentor ZOOTeens on a variety of on and off-grounds projects, including event support, community service and conservation initiatives.
  • Schedule and deliver orientations to incoming volunteers as needed.
  • Document volunteer hours into Volgistics program, as needed.
  • Conduct interviews and recommend placement for the ZOOTeen program.
  • Support Volunteer Department staff with the supervision and coordination of the overall Volunteer Department.
  • Receives, reviews, prepares, and/or submits various reports and records including signups, calendar of events, notebooks, mailings, notices, and general office correspondence.

Minimum Training and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Education, Psychology or related field
  • Minimum of two years of supervisory or managerial experience working with youth and/or adult volunteers or any equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions.
  • Must be 21+ years of age
  • Must be able to work weekends, as well as some evenings and holidays.
  • Must have a valid drivers’ license and be insurable by the fleet insurance carrier.
  • The Toledo Zoo is a drug-free workplace, including marijuana.
