Position Summary:

The Director of Grants and Development is responsible for strategic development, implementation and management of the organization’s grants. The Director is responsible for planning, tracking and reporting on all fund development activity, setting direction and determining strategy for sustainability.


The Director also supervises grant writer(s) and staff that collects, analyzes, and supplies data in support of the organization’s fundraising, marketing, benchmarking, and other strategic functions.

Grant & Fund Development

  1. Develop and implement an annual Action Plan with team goals for the Grants & Development Department.
  2. Identify, research, and analyze potential funding sources in support of strategic initiatives of the Flint and Genesee Group.
  3. Work in cooperation with the Flint and Genesee Group's Leadership Team to develop program concepts, research best practices, and advise leaders on programming that is charitable, supportive of the organization’s goals, and marketable to philanthropic funders.
  4. Work with appropriate project managers and grants department staff to guide the creation of grant proposals and reports for submission to current and potential funding sources.
  5. Coordinate with the Finance Department to ensure all budgets are developed appropriately, timely and thorough use of grant funds, adhering to financial procedures and guidelines of the Flint and Genesee Group.
  6. Cultivate relationships with foundations and potential donors.
  7. Support the organization’s Strategic Planning process as a member of a planning team.
  8. Provide budgeting support by advising on revenue expectations for programs and divisions each year.

Grant Activity Management

  1. Supervise maintenance of files on all grant submissions that have been made on behalf of the Flint & Genesee Group.
  2. Monitor and maintain accurate records of all grant activity including grants in development, submitted, funded, or declined in grant management software.
  3. Work with appropriate project managers to ensure that outcomes of grant funded initiatives, and expectations of funders are understood and complied with after grants have been funded.
  4. Write, review, and edit grant narrative reports with information provided by appropriate project managers and contained in GrantHub and other existing databases.
  5. Work with the CFO and the appropriate project managers to develop the required grant financial reports.

Data & Research

  1. Oversee the creation of enterprise metrics that align with the 3-Year Strategic Plan and the maintenance of organizational metrics on a monthly basis.
  2. Advise on investments into the appropriate data tools; stay trained in their use; and oversee staff responsible for using these data tools to advise on strategy, community outcome tracking, and to serve external partners with data used to inform alignment and strategy.
  3. Support updates to community economic development outcomes for the county and municipal partners as directed by the COO.

Other Responsibilities

1. Update content and conduct Grants 101 and 201 trainings for the public as a part of the Business Training Catalog.

2. Support the implementation of small business grant programs, coaching recipients and monitoring compliance using GrantHub software.

3. Provide organization narratives and metrics reports for the Board of Directors on a quarterly basis

4. Ensure that requests Letters of Support of external partners are aligned with the Group’s priorities, don’t conflict with other partners, and are recorded and maintained for record-keeping purposes. Director may compose Letters of Support or delegate to other members of the team as appropriate.

5. Other duties as assigned.
