Job Summary:

The Director of Public Communications will oversee all official city communications, ensuring consistency, timeliness, and relevance. This role will serve as the principal spokesperson for the city in response to media and public inquiries.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop key messaging on behalf of the City of Flint

Coordinate nationwide media and public relations efforts

Produce press releases and related public information materials

Represent the city in public speaking situations

Cultivate and maintain relationships with multiple media outlets

Oversee and manage content on the City's website and social media pages

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with various stakeholders. A strong understanding of public relations and media relations is essential for success in this role.

DESCRIPTION:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Director of Public Communications shall oversee, direct and coordinate all official city communications. The Director is to ensure all communications are consistent, timely, and relevant. The Director will be the principal spokesperson for the city in response to media or public inquiries.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the direct supervision of the City Administrator who reviews work through conference and reports.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

May exercise working supervision over employees engaged in a variety of tasks pertaining to multimedia communications, media and/or special projects related work.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


Develops key messaging on behalf of the City of Flint as well as coordinates with nationwide media and public relations efforts.

Performs work associated with producing press releases, and related public information materials.

Serves as the representative for the city in situations that require public speaking.

Cultivates and maintains relationships with multiple media outlets to enhance the City's image.

Oversees and manages content on the City's website and social media pages. Addresses public inquiries/complaints quickly and effectively on behalf of the city.

Assists the City Administrator and other senior staff in formulating official public responses.

Advises the City Administrator and other senior staff on matters related to public communications.
