We are seeking a Director of Finance / Controller to join a prestigious hotel chain in Indianapolis. The Director of Finance / Controller will be responsible for managing all budgeting, forecasting, profit and loss reporting, and account reconciliation for the hotel's operating and balance sheet accounts. This role oversees all accounting functions, including income auditing, cashiering, accounts payable, accounts receivable, tax compliance, payroll, and month-end processing and will oversee two direct reports. As a key member of the management team, this position is highly visible and integral to the hotel's financial operations. The Director of Finance / Controller must be available to work weekends as needed, with a flexible schedule in a 24/7 hotel environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures the accuracy and timely execution of all finance functions, including daily and month-end reporting, payroll processing, income audits, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash and credit card management.
  • Completes a thorough month-end close, involving the preparation of journal entries and accruals, recording cost of sales, reconciling balance sheet accounts, ensuring proper tax reporting, and analyzing profit performance.
  • Develops and achieves financial goals aligned with the company's strategic direction.
  • Creates and aligns the annual operating plan with the company's strategic objectives.
  • Provides analytical tools and support to department heads during budget preparation.
  • Leads the sales and operations team in generating accurate monthly forecasts to adapt to business changes.
  • Implements and maintains business practices that foster a sales-driven culture.
  • Ensures that monthly P&L statements accurately reflect revenues, expenses, and costs of sales.
  • Analyzes daily and monthly variances between actual, forecasted, and budgeted performance.
  • Advises the General Manager and executive team on financial and operational issues.
  • Analyzes financial data and market trends to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Facilitates monthly P&L reviews to identify challenges, opportunities, and trends.
  • Manages the capital expense budget and reconciles expenditures on a monthly basis.
  • Ensures robust accounting and operational controls to protect assets and maximize profits.
  • Oversees internal and city audit processes.
  • Manages the accurate collection, posting, and reconciliation of occupancy taxes, sales taxes, and transient marketing district (TMD) fees.
  • Reconciles balance sheet accounts monthly, ensuring totals are supported by appropriate documentation. Provides ongoing guidance and education to the operational team in areas such as:
    • Finance
    • Financial reporting
    • Internal controls
    • Labor management
    • Payroll
    • Month-end reconciliation
    • P&L performance
  • Builds strong professional relationships with the management team through direct counsel and feedback, positively influencing business performance and enhancing the team's financial expertise.
  • Offers continuous coaching and conducts annual reviews to foster positive team development.
  • Cross-trains team members to ensure the effective operation of the department.
  • Promotes and exemplifies the property's core values and service culture.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Five (5) + years of relevant financial or operational experience.
  • Five (5) + years of experience in the Hospitality and/or Food & Beverage industry.

Experience:

  • A strong combination of analytical expertise, financial acumen, and effective communication skills to enhance operational efficiency and achieve the organization's financial objectives.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while independently solving problems.
  • Extensive experience working in close collaboration with all levels of management.
