Fatherhood Specialist Job Description

Position Classification & Compensation
This role is classified as a non-exempt full-time employee as those terms are defined in the Center’s Employee Handbook and is eligible for employee benefits as defined for this classification.

Reports to: Program Coordinator or designee

Effective: 06/24/2024

Salary Range: $18-19 per hour. 

Summary
The Fatherhood Specialist will promote responsible fatherhood by offering workshops, groups, and other direct services based on evidence-based curriculum. They will educate, inspire, and guide fathers and figures, raising awareness of their role and value within their families and community. The specialist will assist them in identifying and overcoming barriers to being involved and effective fathers. The scope of work is subject to change as needed to ensure the project’s success and to meet funders’ requirements. Likewise, complementary changes may be made to projects or individual goals and employee expectations based on agency/management strategic goals. All Center for Children team members are expected to be collegial and collaborative, mutually supportive, and focused on excellent services to clients, fidelity to program models, and ethical provision of services.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Serve as an advocate, educator, and resource coordinator for enrolled participants.
  2. Increase parenting/fathering knowledge and enhance fatherhood skills through group and individual services, promoting frequent and healthy interactions with children.
  3. Assist fathers in addressing issues that affect their relationships with their children and/or co-parents.
  4. Maintain up-to-date paper and electronic client records, including case notes, group notes, sign-in sheets, pre-/post-tests, evaluations, and Certificates of Completion.
  5. Participate in community meetings and outreach activities.
  6. Plan and implement special events for fathers and their children.
  7. Conduct intakes and assessments.
  8. Administer basic needs and incentives and connect fathers to career/workforce support and other resources.
  9. Collaborate with community partners and engage in outreach efforts.
  10. Focus on father-focused events and involve enrolled family members.
  11. Document all services, ensuring quality assurance and peer reviews to support the Program Coordinator.
  12. Work collaboratively with families, education staff, and community partners to promote healthier parent-child relationships through positive discipline approaches and calming techniques.
  13. Follow designated curricula, provide personal instruction, demonstrate educational activities, and deliver research-based materials to parents.
  14. Facilitate group activities for participants.
  15. Cultivate and maintain relationships with families, social service agencies, stakeholders, and the community.
  16. Participate in ongoing program planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
  17. Conduct outreach activities, such as health fairs, presentations, meetings, and marketing campaigns, to recruit families and engage community partners.
  18. Develop positive relationships with residents, community leaders, local groups, organizations, and authorities.
  19. Collaborate as a team to support community-led action on child abuse and maltreatment prevention issues.
  20. Educate community members and stakeholders about El Paso Center for Children’s services through flyers, posters, social media, and networking.
  21. Support face-to-face, online, and print communication and marketing activities.
  22. Work flexibly in various environments, including office-based and community settings, sometimes during evenings and weekends.
  23. Participate in ongoing program planning, monitoring, and evaluation activities.
  24. Perform additional assignments as directed by the Program Coordinator or designated personnel.
  25. Engage in Performance and Quality Improvement processes to ensure fidelity to program models and contractual/licensing obligations.
  26. Other Duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Minimum of an associate’s degree (or at least two years of college) and one year of relevant program experience, with a focus on training or facilitating groups.
  • Experience directly working with youth or families in social services or education may substitute each year of experience for a year of higher education. Additional skills or aptitude testing may be required to ensure excellent communication skills.
  • Preference is given to candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a social/human service-related field and at least one year of professional experience in direct work with youth or families, especially in training or group facilitation.
  • Applicants who are fathers, step-fathers, or father figures will receive bonus points in the hiring process.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English and Spanish (preferred).
  • Computer skills, including proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Suite of business applications: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Good time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate effectively with individuals from all walks of life.
  • Must have driver’s license, vehicle in safe operating condition, and maintain proof of current insurance at Texas minimum standards.
  • Must be able and willing to travel for trainings/meetings/conferences.
  • Must be able to walk, sit, stand, and lift and carry at least 25 pounds.

  • Every program at the Center is community and client-centric. Working with diverse partners to meet the needs of families in our community demands flexibility. The scope of work is subject to change based on the team’s performance and the funder’s expectations and on agency/management strategic goals.  The flexibility needed in this role includes scheduling meetings/events/activities, scheduling supervision sessions with staff, training, staff meetings, and out-of-town travel for training and/or grant requirements.
