Spyglass Talent Solutions, a retained recruitment firm based in Raleigh, NC, has been engaged by Petroleum Marketing Group to conduct a search for an Assistant Controller in Wilmington, NC.

Petroleum Marketing Group was founded in 2001 and has since grown into one of the largest fuel distributors in the Eastern United Statesserving over 1,200 sites from Maine to Florida.

The Assistant Controller will fill a key role within the Retail Accounting team. The position will handle and oversee retail accounting for regional convenience stores chain with sites ocated in Wilmington and Fayetteville, NC. The position will be responsible for preparing and analyzing key internal and external financial reports for each business unit and by entity in a consolidated formats. The position is also responsible for ensuring compliance with internal controls and processes, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee accounting department of 5-8 employees, 2-3 direct reports.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly and year end close process.
  • Oversee and ensure that general ledger and subsidiaries ledgers are accurately and properly reconciled on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis. Accounting transactions are recorded with high degree of accuracy and accounted for in accordance with General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to meet strict financial reporting deadlines.
  • Oversee the preparation and publication of monthly, quarterly and yearly financial statements and analysis.
  • Oversee and ensure all governmental and 3rd party filing data and deadlines are completed.
  • Provide and oversee reporting and analytical support to other departments in the company.
  • Ensure key accounting functions are completed, including & not limited to: Reconciling, Journal Entries.
  • Ability to setup GAAP accounting practices to apply to retail based convenience store transactions.
  • Oversee recording of assets acquisition and disposals and tracking of existing fixed assets, recording depreciation and amortization.
  • Responsible for reviewing and approving balance sheet GL accounts reconciliations based on end of month close calendar timelines. Assist in external audits, compliance reporting and preparation of financial statements and supporting schedules on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis.
  • Preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual internal and external focused financial statements. Analyze financial statements variances for discrepancies and other issues that should be brought to the Controllers and/or Operations departments attention.
  • Ensure financial information has been recorded accurately. Spot errors & trends to suggest ways to improve efficiency.
  • Ensure rent income/ rent expense are recorded in accordance with new lease standard ASC 842. Maintenance and updates of roll forward schedules (e.g. notes payable, fixed assets, retained earnings, etc.) by the specified month, quarter end and yearend deadlines.
  • Review and recommend modifications to accounting systems and retail-based business processes and procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness. Prepare and update documentation related to internal controls, business processes and accounting policies & procedures.
  • Review the agreements/contracts and account for rebranding, loyalty programs and upfront incentives and review/approve amortization schedules.
  • Participate and create cross training across the accounting group to improve department knowledge and resiliency. Keep current on all accounting software or any industry/accounting specific topics. Ensure training and business knowledge is included for new hires.
  • Responsible to analyzing, reconciling, and reporting of findings for specifically assigned projects.
  • Expected to ensure that there is proper support and/or coverage for accounting staff who is on vacation/sick/leave for a period, as needed.
  • Protects organization's value by keeping information confidential.
  • Assisting PMGs Human Resources department with various internal and external reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Support the ongoing and ad hoc reporting needs of the retail chains operations departments.
  • Other retail accounting related duties as assigned.
  • Responsible to ensure that all external financial and operational reporting and compliance requirements to groups such as insurance agencies, 3rd party, and governmental agencies are maintained and submitted properly and timely.

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting (required)
  • CPA preferred, not required
  • 5-7 years of accounting experience. Retail accounting experience preferred.
  • Solid technical accounting and financial statements analysis skills.
  • Understanding of General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Understanding of retail-based inventory valuation methods and concepts.
  • Work independently or as a team member taking ownership of the assigned tasks.
  • Ability to multi-task in a deadline driven environment.
  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency and ability to meet deadlines.
  • PDI software proficiency/experience.
  • Experience with ERP accounting and related software systems.
  • Advanced MS Excel skills including VLOOKUPs and pivot tables
  • Proficiency in word and PowerPoint
