POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer, the Director of Communication drives strategies for and implementation of external and internal communications. This position leads a team of digital media, marketing, and project management professionals. The role works to build the university’s reputation and provide promotional needs to campus. This position supports student success by communicating university initiatives and sharing the student experience to Westminster audiences and the public at large.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Communications and Public Relations

  • Manage and execute all facets of public relations. Develop and execute a strategic communication strategy that elevates the visibility of the university and its leadership.
  • Serve as the point of contact for media outlets. Field all incoming requests and external pitches
  • Develop messaging and narrative for press releases and public communications.
  • Investigate, establish and initiate earned media strategies
  • Responsible for news coverage monitoring, analysis, and sharing to continuously evaluate and adjust the public relations strategy
  • Produce internal communications that build community and keep the campus engaged and informed.
  • Manage the strategy and production of integrated multi-media content for digital placement on multiple platforms – university website, news page, social media, internal newsletters, enrollment platforms, and university publications including enrollment materials.
  • Organize and support campus and off-campus promotional events and materials

Marketing and Digital Engagement

  • Proficiency in branding and marketing principles
  • Experience directing and managing branding, digital, and marketing professionals
  • Strategize integrated multi-media content for digital placement on multiple platforms – university website, news page, social media, internal newsletters, enrollment platforms, and university publications including enrollment materials.

Project Management

  • Manage marketing and digital media professionals and oversee the implementation of marketing, social media, and communication campaigns
  • Manage budgets, procedures, scope, and schedules of department projects
  • Analyze marketing methods and promotional campaigns to determine effectiveness
  • Experience with Microsoft and Adobe products as well as project management tools such as Asana, Teams, Slack, etc.

Crisis and Emergency Communications

  • Develop and execute crisis and emergency communication plans for the university.
  • Conduct research, provide case-studies, and develop talking points for issues management.
  • Develop university statements and support CMO as contact during crisis or emergency.

Organizational Responsibilities

Administrative

  • Provide regular feedback and guidance to employees who report to you.
  • Hiring and training direct report employees and students
  • Manage community relationships, contractors, and vendors

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5 years or more of related work experience in communications, public relations, or other closely related fields.
  • 2 years of experience managing teams and individuals who report to you.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field.
  • Is familiar with Public Involvement principles, levels of engagement, strategies, and tools.
  • Some areas may require additional experience with specific computer systems and may require skills in interviewing, ad copy writing, editing, photography, web writing, graphic design, audio & video production, and oral presentation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Masters Degree in related field
  • Experience in higher education and non-private entities

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervision of assigned staff and/or student positions as detailed in the Supervisor Handbook.
  • May be designated as essential personnel in cases of campus closure or emergency.
  •  Extended hours, including evenings and weekends will be required.
  • Ability to respond on-call as assigned, including evenings and weekends is required.
  •  Other duties as assigned.
