Summary

Christ Health Center is seeking a Clinical Medical Interpreter who wants to be a part of providing high-quality, distinctively Christian care, addressing medical and spiritual healthcare needs for the underserved in Birmingham, Alabama. Provides accurate interpretation and translation of critical medical information in Spanish as a direct service to physicians and/or other health care providers who are seeing patients who cannot speak or understand English, when specifically required by the provider. The Interpreter also may cover other translating needs at registration, phone calls, patient portal, written instructions, and lab results.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Translate for clinic check-in, medical or dental assessment and /or treatment with provider, instructions provided at the end of the visit, and check-out
  • Managing the inbox for Spanish Interpreters, after hours Athena messages, and tickler expirations.
  • Interpreters can notify patients of labs/test results with guidance from providers.
  • Phone attendance for the Spanish phone line
  • Self motivated and flexible to manage the daily patient schedule and/or clinic needs.
  • Able to multi-task in a fast paced setting with distractions.
  • Accuracy in collecting and entering data into the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Able to manage conflict and irrational behaviors effectively in patients and families that present at the registration windows.
  • Answering and triaging incoming telephone calls, portal requests, callbacks, and voicemail.
  • Communication with front office, medical, pastoral care, and leadership teams via verbal, phone, text, patient case, and email as needed.
  • Exceptional customer service and telephone courtesy skills.

  • Each employee of Christ Health Center is vital to providing overall quality care to our patients and may be included in the patient care team and daily huddle when deemed necessary by the Core Care Team.
Requirements:

Qualifications, Education, Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Must speak fluent Spanish and be able to understand different dialects within the language.
  • Able to pass the English/Spanish Medical and Dental test.
  • Must be a United States Citizen or have the ability to work in the US.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact and promote trusting relationships with our patients, families, physicians, fellow employees, and volunteers.
  • Able to organize and set priorities to accomplish goals in a timely manner.
  • Able to work in a multi-cultural setting.
  • Understanding of CHC’s relationship with the community and maintains a positive image and relationships.
  • Understanding and compliance with HIPAA requirements and obligations.

Attendance Standards

  • Punctual and dependent for assigned/confirmed shifts.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence and reports; Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to patients, visitors, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.

Reasoning Ability

  • The ability to apply general rules to specific problems to produce answers that make sense. The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events) and to convey the information to others.

Physical/Mental Demands

  • Work requires the ability to lift objects weighing up to 20-50 pounds.
  • Work requires ability to carry objects weighing up to 20-50 pounds.
  • Work requires ability to stand +/- 90% of the time.
  • Work requires ability to stoop and bend, to reach, and grab with arms and hands; manual dexterity and to communicate with others.
  • Work requires proofreading and checking documents for accuracy.
  • Work requires ability to use a keyboard and visualize a computer monitor to enter words or data.
  • Clinic may be crowded and noisy.
  • Some stress resulting from the diversity and the intensity of patients and their care.
  • OSHA personal exposure risk category I & II.
  • Airborne personal exposure risk category I (Possible exposure of the healthcare worker to patients capable of transmitting M. tuberculosis). Universal precautions will be adhered to at all times.
