Job Summary

The Staff Accountant will prepare balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other financial reports. Responsibilities also include executing everyday accounting processes and transactions in support of the Accounting Manager. This role will be directly responsible for general ledger and bank reconciliations and maintaining the ledger classifications' accuracy. The ideal candidate will be able to work as part of a team in a deadline-driven environment, multi-task, and be comfortable taking directions and working independently.

Role and Responsibilities

To perform the job successfully, an individual must perform each essential duty satisfactorily and demonstrate the following competencies to perform this position's essential functions consistently. All employees are expected to adhere to and be knowledgeable of Orion180 operations standards, established security/safety rules, and requirements for attendance. The requirements listed below are representative of the fundamental knowledge, skill, and ability required to perform the job successfully:

  • Document financial transactions in the general ledger.
  • Assist in preparing current financial status by collecting information and preparing balance sheets, profit and loss statements, and other reports.
  • Substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents.
  • Maintain accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures.
  • Guide accounting clerical staff by coordinating activities and answering questions.
  • Reconcile financial discrepancies by collecting and analyzing account information.
  • Verify, allocate, post, and reconcile transactions.
  • Produce error-free accounting reports for review.
  • Review and recommend modifications to accounting systems and procedures.
  • Participate in setting financial standards and forecasting processes.
  • Provide input into the department's goal-setting process.
  • Support month-end and year-end close process.
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Communicate effectively with agencies and insureds on refunds or commissions.
  • Contribute to a strong client relationship through positive interactions with client personnel.
  • Communicate with the manager about work status and issues that may arise.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting
  • CPA is not required but is preferred
  • Minimum of (5) five years accounting experience
  • Insurance industry experience is not required but preferred.
Preferred Skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a team-oriented environment.
  • Must be self-directed and able to meet deadlines.
  • Highly computer literate with advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong technical accounting skills with core knowledge of internal controls and US GAAP.
  • Solid understanding of policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels.
  • Act as a relationship builder and collaborator; have the ability to drive consensus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including presenting and facilitating meetings.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Awareness of business trends.
  • Experience with creating financial statements.
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.
  • Excellent accounting software user and administration skills.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Aptitude for numbers and quantitative skills.
  • Intermediate understanding of accounting and reporting standards, gaining experience in researching as it relates to accounting issues.
