Position Summary

 Under the direction of the Lead Classroom Teacher, the Classroom Assistant will work in an elementary classroom comprised of students ages 6-9 or 9-12. This position requires love, patience, and respect for children. The Classroom Assistant will encourage the children to be independent and model for them appropriate manners and behaviors and help the lead teacher facilitate a classroom environment designed to promote social, physical, and intellectual growth following the philosophies of Maria Montessori.


Provide Support to the Lead Classroom Teacher

  1. Manage the classroom in such a way that protects the lessons given by the lead teacher.
  2. Encourage the children to be independent and model appropriate manners and behaviors.
  3. Work with individual children or small groups as directed by the lead teacher.
  4. Preparing the Montessori classroom environment to meet the student’s needs and interests.
  5. Take the lead on supplemental activities such as DRA Assessments, guided reading groups, and assessment preparation as directed by the lead teacher.
  6. As directed by the Lead, provide communications, as needed, with parents and guardians.

Assist in the Maintenance of the Classroom Environment

  1. Clean the classroom and replenish materials and supplies in the morning and afternoon.
  2. Move throughout the classroom during the work period to make sure the classroom environment continues to be clean, lively, and inviting.
  3. Make materials as required by the lead teacher.

Assist in Data Collection and Record-keeping

  1. Participate in all training related to data collection and assessment.
  2. Gather written observations and input them in Transparent Classroom as required by the lead teacher.
  3. Discuss observations with the lead teacher and other teaching staff.

Provide Supervision during non-academic times
1. Provide supervision and enriching activities during non-academic times including lunch and recess.
2. Provide communication about students’ development during these times to lead teacher.
