The Sporting News is seeking a creative and driven content producer to join its growing editorial team. 


At SN, digital content producers are the eyes and ears of our SEO-driven mission to explain the sports world. You will be responsible for identifying and writing compelling articles that answer questions fans want to know about the biggest stories in sports.


The successful candidate will have sharp multisport news judgment skills, an understanding of how sports overlap with pop culture and current events on the internet, and a deep curiosity about search user trends. 


Daily duties range from live breaking news coverage to writing an SEO article about how to watch a game or a deeper news explainer that advances a story in real time. You should also be comfortable writing articles in digital formats, including live blogs and how-to guides, while incorporating multimedia, bullet points, tables, graphics and data in your storytelling. 


While this role requires versatility across all major North American sports, the NFL forms up the center of our desk coverage. Applicants must have strong knowledge of and passion for football from college to the pros. A demonstrated ability to produce content for a betting audience is a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Curate and write intent-driven, explanatory news stories that distinguish SN on search engines
  • Produce a range of article types, from live blogs to how-to guides
  • Contribute article ideas at daily editorial meetings and in Slack topic channels
  • Line edit written content for accuracy, focus and style/grammar
  • Collaborate with deputy editor on tentpole planning and budgeting
  • Site and app management: execute link strategy, update homepage, write push notifications, etc.
  • Support SN’s social media team by suggesting creative copy/ideas for article sharing
  • Contribute ideas for original multimedia content, both on and off platform


QUALIFICATIONS 


  • 1-3 years of digital sports media experience, preferably in a newsroom setting
  • Mastery of writing clean, concise copy that explains to readers what is happening and why
  • Understand SEO tools and best practices, including writing headlines, URLs and copy for a search audience, and how to farm Google Trends for content ideas
  • Comfortable working under pressure in a fast-paced news environment
  • Sharp and creative news judgment instincts to discern interesting content from noise
  • Comfortable using all major social media platforms and know how to create content specific to each
  • An eye for smart data, graphics and other visual ideas to enhance storytelling
  • A strong, versatile understanding of most major U.S. professional and collegiate sports, and a willingness to learn others outside your comfort zone
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, as required


NOT ESSENTIAL BUT GREAT IF YOU ALSO HAVE 


  • College degree in journalism or a related communications field
  • Experience writing about sports betting odds and trends
  • Understanding of how to use audience data and tools to shape content strategy
  • Ability to learn new roles and adapt in a constantly evolving industry
