Our organization provides a range of support services to Veterans and military families to help them build successful post-service careers. We offer professional career coaching, skills assessments to identify transferable skills, training in high-growth industries such as IT and cybersecurity, and job placement assistance. Our networking groups, workshops, and events help veterans connect with potential employers and other professionals in their field. Additionally, we work closely with the Veterans American Job Center of California to provide referrals that maximize available benefits, services, training, and educational opportunities for Veterans and their families.


DESCRIPTION

Our VPAN team is looking for an outgoing, friendly Veterans Employment & Retention Specialist to conduct outreach in Los Angeles County. The primary focus of this role is to conduct Outreach throughout the Los Angeles County Supervisory District 5 area to connect with Veterans, National Guard, Military Reservists and Their Families to provide increased access to resources and benefits.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Peer Support Specialist will act as a liaison/ advocate for Veterans in need of assistance in various aspects of life including but not limited to the following responsibilities:

  • Provide peer support, mentorship, and coach participants in navigating and accessing benefits and resources.
  • Assist with coordinating individual or peer led groups in various topics.
  • Welcome clients and identify needs and expectations to create a positive client experience.
  • Administer and interpret a variety of assessment tools.
  • Assist Veterans to identify goals and develop plans to assist with attaining identified goals.
  • Develop individual service plans that address Veteran needs.
  • Assist in data collection and preparing reports.
  • Maintain compliance with agency and funder protocols and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.
  • Conduct presentations to various groups/businesses as it pertains to job placement & retention goals.
  • Provide comprehensive case management/assessment activities (as needed).
  • Coach Veterans on interview skills, as needed.
  • Facilitate job readiness workshops.
  • Research civilian career paths that would utilize Veterans’ existing skills.
  • Assist clients in writing targeted resumes.
  • Responsible for client progress and job placement/wages/retention.
  • Track client data in Internal and State databases through data entry and comprehensive case notes.
  • Must meet contract goals for job placement, training completion, and job retention.
  • Develop working relationships with other agencies that provide services to veterans.
  • Will also work as part of a team in developing new grants and funding opportunities.
  • Must meet weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly program goals as set by Program Manager.
  • Other duties assigned as needed for the efficient operation of the Center/Program.
Requirements:

The successful applicant will have a passion to work and connect in Veteran related areas and is knowledgeable about the range of services in the community and develops to maintain relationships with partners to deliver a comprehensive array of services to clients. Will make group presentations and may deliver workshops in the areas of general Veteran benefits, housing programs, educational programs, employment programs and accessing VA Health Care benefits. Must be available to work flexible hours including evenings and some weekends.


Other requirements include:

  • BA or BS degree in Career Counseling, Communications, or another related field preferred. May be substituted for experience.
  • Background or experience in Case Management, Career Counseling or Mental Health.
  • Prior military experience highly desirable. Peer Support Certification or aligned experience a plus.
  • Requires a minimum of 2 years’ experience in Veteran Services or career counseling.
  • Requires a high level of customer service and counseling expertise with the ability to multi-task.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating effectively with stakeholders in written and oral form, including electronic media, using positive interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience with Veterans and high- risk populations is desired.
  • Skill in facilitating groups, writing case notes, and working with a diverse population.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office software and other relevant software.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must be able to do the following: stand for extended periods; sit for extended periods; bend and reach for filing and other job-related functions; climb up and down stairs; bend, stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials; pull, push, and lift; reach both above and below shoulder height. Specific visual abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to visually inspect work. Manual dexterity to operate computer and other office equipment required. Travel to employer and client work sites is frequent. May be required to work some evenings and an occasional weekend day. Requires traveling to various business and other work sites as well. Office or classroom environment in fast paced setting. Must be able to lift 15lbs with a fair amount of sitting, answering telephones, and movement within the Career Center.
