Position Summary: 
The Senior Policy Associate, State Partnerships works with policy division staff and other divisions to help develop the Institute’s partnerships with state advocates throughout the U.S. in support of strong SRHR state policies and deepened relationships. This position’s success relies upon superior collaboration skills to create cohesive, strategic partnerships in line with the Institute’s short- and long-term goals. The division is currently rebuilding and reshaping its approach to equitable collaborations, and this position will have the opportunity to work with others in advancing the division’s vision for strategic impact, collaboration and equity as it applies to state policies and state coalitions in particular. This position does not include any formal supervisory responsibility. 
 
Responsibilities: 
 
  • Working in close collaboration with the Director of Public Policy, State the state team, and other staff to pilot and implement new approaches to building strong partnerships and collaborations with state advocates.  
  • Represent the Institute in existing coalitions pertaining to state policy issues.  
  • Identify, nurture and manage strategic partnerships and projects with state advocates, learning where the Institute can play a supporting role in state strategies. 
  • Develop a deep understanding of the partners’ state policy goals and identify and implement tactics to support their work. 
  • Prepare and contribute to a range of materials specifically for key audiences and stakeholders at the state level in consultation with partner organizations. 
  • Develop and review written materials in a range of formats and for a range of audiences.  
  • Collaborate with the state team and other staff to improve online resources and tools for state advocates and to infuse Guttmacher data and research into state advocacy. 
  • Track the progress of the Institute’s work with state advocates, supporting evaluation of impact and recommending adjustments along the way. 
  • Draft grant proposals and other documents and represent the Institute with donors. 
  • Perform other tasks as appropriate.  
 
 Qualifications and Skills: 
  • A minimum of five years of relevant work experience, including working in state or national coalitions to advance state policy advocacy goals and in leading collaborations with organizational partners. 
  • Demonstrated experience working in the reprodutive rights, health, and justice field. Experience working at a reproductive justice organization preferred. 
  • A demonstrated understanding and commitment to the role of the Institute in promoting antiracism in the reproductive rights field.  -  
  • Understanding of state policies and the policy-making process. Experience working within a state advocacy organization preferred. 
  • Ability to build support and momentum across a range of external stakeholders and contexts; experience in creating and managing sensitive, strategic relationships. 
  • Experience managing projects required. 
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills. 
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to be creative, manage multiple priorities in a time-sensitive manner and pay close attention to detail. 
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and database management tools.  
  • Compelling and thoughtful communication style that meets the needs of internal and external audiences and engenders trust and collaboration. 
  • Positive attitude and flexibility, with the ability to push work forward through obstacles and adapt quickly as things change. 
  • Ability to foster an inclusive workplace, where all staff feel respected, heard, engaged and valued. 
  • Able to travel 30% of time.  
 
 
Salary and benefits 
Salary starting at $95,044 to $147,307, commensurate with experience.  Excellent benefits that include medical, dental, vision and life insurance; vacation, personal and sick time, paid parental leave; tuition reimbursement; commuting subsidy; and 401(k) with employer match.
