The Senior Policy Associate, Federal Issues is responsible for advancing a federal policy agenda for SRHR that is comprehensive, evidence-based and rooted in human rights principles. Reporting to the Director of Federal Policy, this position supports the Institute’s work on a portfolio of SRHR issues, with a focus on foreign policy, and engages with partners, policymakers and advocates in person and in a range of written formats to bring an evidence-based perspective to key policy discussions in the United States. The division is currently rebuilding and reshaping its approach, and this position will have the opportunity to work with others in advancing the division’s vision for strategic impact, collaboration and equity as it applies to federal policy.

Responsibilities:

  • Help lead Guttmacher’s work on a specific portfolio of SRHR issues at the federal level, including foreign policy.
  • Track federal policies and identify opportunities to inject data and analysis into critical policy debates.
  • Represent the Institute in advocacy and lobbying with Congress, relevant government agencies and through participation in advocacy coalitions and initiatives.
  • Coordinate with Guttmacher’s research and communications staff to translate evidence into easy-to-digest materials and tools, create messages and shape the narrative.
  • Develop and review written materials in a range of formats and for various audiences.
  • In close coordination with cross-divisional teams, stay abreast of current and forthcoming Guttmacher data that can be leveraged in the policy arena.
  • Contribute to the Institute’s “rapid-response” effort and respond to external requests for information.
  • Perform other job-related tasks as appropriate.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience in the fields of SRHR, immigrant rights, human rights or public health.
  • Understanding of U.S. policy and the policy-making process.
  • Congressional and Executive Branch advocacy experience.
  • Proven track record on collaborative partnerships; understanding the value of mutually beneficial and impactful working partnerships.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to be creative, manage multiple priorities in a time-sensitive manner and pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to foster an inclusive workplace, where all staff feel respected, heard, engaged and valued.
  • Compelling and thoughtful communication style that meets the needs of internal and external audiences and engenders trust and collaboration.
  • Able to travel to meetings and conferences periodically.

Salary and benefits:

Salary starting at $95,044 to $147,307 commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits that include medical, dental, vision and life insurance; vacation, personal and sick time, paid parental leave; tuition reimbursement; commuting subsidy; and 401(k) with employer match.
