The primary job function of the Youth Advocate is to: engage, advocate, communicate, and address the needs of children and youth that have emotional, behavioral, mental health and or substance use challenges who are receiving services at the NYCCC, including South Beach Psychiatric Center, RFK PS 169, Astor Case Management Services, and any other program(s) FOTM is contracted to provide services.
The Peer Youth Advocate also provides transitional services and educational workshops to youth within the various programs. Promotion of quality services, youth empowerment, and support to youth are essential features of this position. To meet the diverse needs of the youth served, schedules may vary and staff can be reassigned at any time based on program needs.
Peer Youth Advocates are mandated reporters and must follow the guidelines of reporting child abuse and or neglect.
Qualifications/RequirementsQualities:

Qualifications:
- The Youth Peer Advocate will be an individual 18 to 30 years old who has self-identified as a person who has first-hand experience with social, emotional, medical, developmental, substance use, and/or behavioral challenges, and has experience receiving mental health services and/or navigating other child-serving systems.
- At a minimum, have a high school diploma or equivalency (preferred) or a State Education Commencement Credential. This educational requirement can be waived by the certifying agency if the person has demonstrated competencies and has relevant life experience sufficient for the Peer Certification.
- Demonstrates qualities of leadership, including knowledge of advocacy, and can positively reflect on and share his/her experiences with others.
- Assist youth with achieving goals pertaining to skill building, coaching, transitional support, self-advocacy, self-efficacy, empowerment and/or community connections.
- Deliver community-based services in-person and using approved virtual platforms individually or in a group setting.
- Support youth-guided care by participating with youth in treatment planning.
- Monitor the youth’s progress in achieving goals detailed in the plan; collaborate with other care providers and community support to help youth meet their needs.
- Complete Treatment Plans as needed Progress Notes after every service timely in the Electronic Health Record, no later than 48 hours of the event.
- Has strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient utilizing Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and virtual platforms (Zoom, WebEx, and Microsoft Teams).
- Work flexible hours, as required.
- Bilingual and bicultural candidates are encouraged to apply.
- Candidates possessing exceptional skills but not all of the qualifications are also encouraged to apply.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Work in collaboration with all Peer Family Advocates in engaging youth in planning their own care and having their voice heard
- Peer Engagement. The ability to effectively connect and engage with youth. Peer Engagement is 90% of the Peer Youth Advocates role and responsibility. This also includes engagement with staff and partner staff agency.
- Share personal knowledge and experiences about the youth-serving system and resources available to youth
- Provide support to youth at community meetings and other meetings as needed
- Provide public education about youth mental health issues
- Assist in the organization of social, recreational, and educational activities for youth
- Participate in morning rounds meetings, councils, committees, and workgroups representing the interests of youth with emotional and behavioral challenges in a variety of public forums and advisory groups to promote youth involvement in child-serving systems, governance, program planning, development, and implementation.
- Enter all services on a daily/weekly basis into a data entry system and maintain records up to date.
- Peer Youth Advocate is required to complete the Peer Youth Power Credential, FDC training (and successfully pass the exam), OMH New Employee training, Safety In the Community training, FOTM's Just the Basics Advocates training, Peer Recovery Coach training, EHR AWARDS training and Mental Health First Aid within one year of initial hire date if they have not done so already, and any other additional training identified.
- Develop and facilitate youth advisory councils for youth on campus.
- Peer Bridger - assists youth with transitioning to the community or lower levels of care.
- Attend meetings and conferences when assigned to represent the youth voice in discussions.
- Participate in workforce development training when offered.
- Travel is required at 75%.
- Must be able to work autonomously and in group settings.
- Other duties as assigned.
