POSITION PURPOSE
The purpose of this position is to provide high-quality diagnostic ultrasound services to veterans and their family members at the VA Hospital. As an Ultrasound Technologist, you will play a crucial role in the healthcare team by performing a variety of ultrasound examinations that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions. Your expertise will ensure that veterans and their family members receive timely and accurate diagnostic imaging, contributing to their overall health and well-being.
Hours
- Ultrasound Technologists will work on a rotating basis as needed for coverage. Typical tours of duty include:
- 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM
- 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM
- 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
- 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM
- This schedule includes Federal Holidays and weekends during an 80-hour pay period.
- On-call hours are:
- Weekdays from 4:30 PM to 8:00 PM for STAT studies.
- Weekends and holidays from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM for STAT studies.
- Standby rate applies for on-call hours, and callback rate applies when the technologist is called in.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Independently interpret and carry out the requests made by physicians, radiologist or medical officers.
- Properly verify the patient’s identity using two unique identifiers and active identification methods; follow VHA directives and policies.
- Explain procedures to patients in a manner that gains cooperation, understanding, and alleviates apprehension.
- Transfer patients from stretcher or wheelchair to sonographer exam table using safe patient handling techniques and ergonomic methods.
- Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations on multiple body areas, including the abdomen, neck, chest, extremities, pelvis, and retroperitoneal space, to acquire high-quality images for diagnosis and treatment.
- Perform intra-operative ultrasound examinations to assist interventional radiologists in tumor ablation procedures in a sterile surgical environment.
- Set up equipment, make multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments, and manually maneuver the transducer to perform the exam, ensuring accurate results.
- Properly select patient information from the HIS/RIS list on the workstation, verify patient information prior to scanning, make annotations, ensure correct image orientation, and configure the image before transmitting to PACS.
- Ensure quality assurance of the scan (positioning, labeling, technique, network information) before transmission to the PACS network.
- Act professionally and cooperatively, using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy with the customer base.
- Encourage teamwork with co-workers and communicate effectively.
- Coordinate patient care activities with other services to facilitate timely treatment.
- Maintain a neat and clean work area, ensuring supplies are properly stocked to prevent delays in examinations.
- Perform or schedule routine housekeeping duties to ensure the ultrasound area is clean and sanitary, minimizing cross-contamination risks.
- Assist interventional radiologists in cyst punctures, aspiration biopsies, and catheter placements using ultrasound techniques, requiring surgical sterile techniques.
- Perform specialized ultrasound examinations such as intra-operative ultrasound for vascular surgeries, venous Doppler, vein mapping, carotid Doppler, arterial duplex, arterial bypass graft and stent assessment, renal artery Doppler, renal transplant Doppler, liver Doppler, P TIPS assessment, pseudoaneurysm assessment, aorta endograft leak assessment, and AV fistula Doppler.
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
- Associate’s degree in diagnostic medical sonography or a related field
- At least 2 years of work experience in Ultrasound technology
- Certification from American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
- Experience in specific areas like abdominal, obstetric/gynecologic, and vascular ultrasound can be beneficial.
- Anatomy and Physiology: In-depth understanding of human anatomy and physiology to accurately interpret ultrasound images.
- Medical Terminology: Familiarity with medical terminology and diagnostic procedures3.
- Proficient in office automation equipment and software.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and customer service communication skills.

MACHINES & EQUIPMENT
The incumbent must be able to effectively operate the current computer system, telephone system, and other office machines such as a copier.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Lifting and Moving Patients: Ultrasound technologists often need to lift or assist in moving patients, which can require lifting at least 50 pounds.
- Standing for Long Periods: The job typically involves standing for prolonged periods, sometimes for the entire duration of a shift.
- Manual Dexterity: Fine motor skills are essential for manipulating the ultrasound transducer and adjusting equipment settings.
- Stamina: The ability to work long shifts, which can be up to 12 hours, including nights and weekends, is often required.
- Physical Agility: Technologists need to be able to position themselves and the equipment around patients who may be in various states of mobility.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The incumbent works in a hospital environment that is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions such as heat, cold, or extreme noise.
Security and privacy training will be provided as part of this role to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of PCS’ associate and customer data.
