Title: Lead, Development Engineer

Reports to: Head of Research and Development

Location: 3601 Faraday Avenue, Davis, CA 95618

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm

Classification: Exempt

Travel: 25%

Employment is conditioned on DMG MORI's ability to obtain and maintain any necessary export licensing.

Work on designing, testing, and prototyping new innovations for industrial machine tools in the field of additive manufacturing. This will require creating CAD and drawing files, test plans and test benches, and a comprehensive understanding of additive manufacturing processes.

Responsibilities include up to and are not limited to: Perform development engineering work under direct supervision.

  • Check all technical work for section – check sheets, design reviews, redlines. (15%)
  • Schedule direct designer work – daily, weekly, monthly assignments and check ins. (5%)
  • Summarize and report technical work results to different technical leaders and management. (15%)
  • Directly lead product architecture, BOM structure, Skeleton Models to ensure overall product design is well maintained and directed in CREO. (20%)
  • Design and development of unique approaches for powder conveyance, optical calibration, laser control, and gas flow. (20%)
  • Conduct time estimates for components to understand impact of product innovations. Calculation of optimal machine parameters for part processing. Inspection of finished parts for quality and accuracy. (10%)
  • Frequent communication with internal technical staff, external customers, and external suppliers. (15%)

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/software/electrical engineering
  • Experience with programming (C#, Python, LabVIEW)
  • Experience in product development, a proven track record of innovation as demonstrated by granted patents is preferred.
  • 1-5 years Mechanical Design Experience, CAD and preferably FEA and other simulation and analysis tools.
  • Experience with PTC CREO and Windchill highly preferred.
  • Knowledge in part processing, metal cutting, CNC programming, reading drawings, and machine setup.
  • Research, design, development, and testing of equipment for AM (additive manufacturing).
  • Basic understanding of Metallurgy.
  • Understanding of statistical process control and machine reliability analysis
  • Proven experience of communicating professionally with internal and external customers.
  • Proven flexibility with shifting priorities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Proven organizational skills, with high attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical/problem solving abilities.

Work Environment:

Exposure to manufacturing/machining environments which may present possible hazards such as noise, electricity, chemicals, heavy equipment, and other automated and manual machinery. General office environment experienced at DMG MORI office.

Physical Demands:

Frequent: Travel, operating a vehicle, standing, walking, bending, squatting, stooping, sitting, and reaching. Pushing, pulling, and lifting objects. Repetitive foot, leg, hand, arm, shoulder, and torso movements.

Periodic: Operating power equipment, sitting at desk, utilizing computers and phones.

Occasional: Lifting or moving up to 50lbs.
