Job Description

Certified Peer Specialists work from the perspective of their lived experience to help build environments conducive to recovery. They promote hope, personal responsibility, empowerment, education, and self-determination in the communities where they serve. CPSs are trained to assist others in skill-building, problem-solving, setting up and maintaining self-help mutual support groups, and building self-directed recovery tools. A critical role of the CPS is supporting others in developing their recovery goals, and specific steps to reach those goals.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under immediate general supervision, the Certified Peer Specialist (CPS) provides peer support services; serves as a consumer advocate; provides consumer information and peer support for consumers in a variety of settings. The CPS performs a wide range of tasks to support consumers in living their own lives and directing their own recovery and wellness process. The CPS will model competency in recovery and wellness.

● Coordinating logistics for the client such as medical appointments; therapy sessions; etc.

● Meeting with the clients regularly to offer one to one support.

● Maintaining confidentiality of records relating to consumers’ treatment.

● Utilize and teach problem solving techniques with individuals and groups;

● Provide 15 or more billable hours per week.

● Works with Clinical Managers and other multi-disciplinary team members to develop and    implement treatment plans/assessments for clients.

● Creates appropriate encounter notes and input into systems as needed.

● Model effective coping techniques and self-help strategies in working with the clients.

● ​Teach and role model the value of every individual’s recovery experience.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Peer Support Specialist Requirements:

● High School diploma or GED

● Valid driver’s license

● DBH Peer Support Specialist Certification

● Lived experience with mental health conditions, substance abuse, or trauma;

● Excellent verbal and written communications skills

● An understanding of the recovery process and how to use their own story to support others.

Other duties as assigned.
