Intake Specialist

35 hours per week / $24.00 - $25.00 per hour

(The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.)


Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Program Manager, responsible for screening and tracking referrals of veteran families looking for supportive services. Will assess that the veteran family qualifies for services and if they do so will enter them for services and assist in linking them with a Housing and Benefits Specialist; if the veteran family does not qualify will explore other community resources that they may be eligible for or may better fit their needs based on the housing first and psychosocial rehabilitation model of treatment and services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: This is not an exhaustive task list, and other duties may be assigned as deemed appropriate or necessary by the supervisor or program director.   • Interface with government, community, and private agencies to obtain referrals of veteran families who need support with obtaining housing or preventing homelessness. Follow up with referring agencies to inform them of the status of eligibility for the household
  • Conduct a detailed screening with veteran household members to gather documentation and information to assess for eligibility and fit for the program and bring that information to the Operation Healthy Homecoming (OHH) team to determine whether entering a veteran household into the program
  • Enter eligible households into the Homeless Management Information System and link them with the Housing and Benefits Specialist that the household will be working with
  • Identify and assess veterans at risk of homelessness at initial pre-screening, and provide assistance in completing prevention services in a timely manner
  • Represent MHALA at community housing provider meetings, HUD-VASH, and other meetings and events focused on homelessness and Veteran Homelessness
  • Work actively to stay current with technical and administrative changes in various housing programs and their requirements
  • Network with other veteran and mainstream service agencies to share ideas and resources, develop effective processes for referrals, solve common problems, and maintain a professional network of referral resources for housing and support services
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and other aspects of the day-to-day operations and community life of the Agency. Works cooperatively with other staff to ensure the smooth and seamless delivery of supportive services to the Agency and the veterans and their families it serves
  • Assist and support program documentation standards of staff in accordance with MHALA, LACDMH County Contracted Provider standards and funding source requirements, and documents in Electronic Health Record (EHR), including 24-hour turnaround documentation
  • Independently or in collaboration with Information Specialists, complete and maintain all records and documentation needed for program compliance and accountability in accordance with MHALA standards and funding source requirements
  • Read, perform research, attend classes, workshops, or seminars, and participate in other professional development activities in order to maintain and enhance personal and professional skills.

Position Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED and a minimum of one year of hands-on experience in rehabilitation services or housing services for disabled and/or homeless persons and/or relevant/equivalent experience in the private, public, or military sector
  • Minimum one year of Military Service (Active, Reserve, and/or National Guard) may serve “in lieu” of required experience as needed. Employment contingent upon verification and inspection of DD214
  • Driving with a current class C driver’s license, a vehicle for transportation, proof of valid automobile insurance, and the ability to be ensured by MHALA’s liability insurance are conditions of employment

  • Must be or quickly become familiar with federal, state, and local housing subsidy programs and the sources available for them
  • Must be or quickly become familiar with the practices and procedures for the preparation of applications for subsidized housing and disabled/low-income housing loans
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with public and private housing providers, mental health consumers and their family members or client advocates, vendors, and other staff
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, writing skills, and computer skills
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, and able to prioritize and juggle multiple projects without losing productivity
  • Flexible work schedule to include some evenings or weekends when necessary
  • Driving with a current class C driver’s license, a vehicle for transportation, proof of valid automobile insurance, and the ability to be ensured by MHALA’s liability insurance are conditions of employment
  • TB clearance and yearly retesting is a condition of employment
