Title: Vehicle Maintenance Manager

Purpose: This position is responsible for assisting the Director of Maintenance with the performance, control, guidance and direction of the maintenance department, which includes the maintenance, cleanliness, and repair of all revenue vehicles, support vehicles, and shop equipment. Advises on the maintenance, cleanliness and repair of all MTA / WeGo Public Transit facilities and properties.

Assist Director of Maintenance in managing Maintenance Operations

  • Ensures the Maintenance Department maintains appropriate standards of cleanliness and repair for all vehicles and equipment as well as properties, facilities, and passenger amenities.
  • Ensures that all vehicles and equipment are inspected at regular intervals for compliance with safety rules and regulations, fire protection safeguards, and state of good repair; ensures required repairs are made.
  • Ensures the MTA / WeGo Public Transit is in compliance with all maintenance related safety, maintenance, and environmental regulations of the Federal, State, and Local authorities.
  • Ensures the efficient operation of heavy-maintenance activities such as in-house rebuild programs, apprentice program development, body/accident repair and engine/transmission overhauls.
  • Develops departmental policies, standard operating procedures, rules, department goals and work methods.
  • Analyzes and evaluates reports, practices, and trends for ways to improve operation of department; i.e., fluid report, road call tracking, safety campaign, equipment recalls, etc.
  • Formulates long and short-range goals and objectives for better operating efficiency of the Maintenance department; initiates programs targeting specific equipment to increase vehicle reliability, safety and performance.
  • Develops and manages capital and operating budgets.
  • Working with appropriate departments, coordinates safety and training requirements with Training Dept. for all maintenance employees.

Assists Purchasing/Inventory Control

  • Assists Purchasing Manager in monitoring work performed by employees under his/her

supervision; helps to ensure that proper work records and inventories are kept and assists in

determining proper inventory levels.

General Administration

  • Oversees records of fuel and oil consumption, tire use, equipment, road failures, shop work progress and overall maintenance costs, provides necessary reports for senior staff.
  • Prepares analyses and recommendations for acquisition of new equipment and formulation of the annual maintenance budget and develops necessary specifications for the Director of Maintenance.
  • Controls expenditures, performs cost/benefit analysis of proposed business decisions.
  • Meets with the Union, handles first step discipline and grievance hearings.
  • Assist in collective bargaining agreement negotiation with local union leadership and upper DTO management.

Performs other duties as assigned

Recommended Preparation for Employment:

Any combination of education, training, and experience equivalent to:

Bachelor degree in business administration, engineering, public administration, transportation or related field:

Three years’ experience as an assistant director, senior manager of a similar department or equivalent.

Two years’ experience in fleet management and labor relations. The successful applicant will have a proven record of interpersonal skills, fleet diagnostics, alternative fuel systems, statistical analyses, team building techniques, and causal inference.
