We do this by informing, empowering, and mobilizing our community to take action on important issues that directly affect their families and loved ones.

Make the Road Action (MRA), a 501(c)(4) organization, is committed to building power for justice in immigrant and low-income working-class communities of color. MRA operates in five states - New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. We work to create social change, connect voters to the candidates and issues most important to them, and work hands-on in a fast-paced environment to create long-term impact in the communities that need it most.

Make the Road States (MRstates), a 501(c)(3) organization, is the national home for the second-generation Make the Road family of organizations that serve to uplift the voices of working-class immigrants, women, LGBTQIA people, and people of color.

Current Opening:

The Government Affairs Manager will assist in developing and advocating for MRNV's policy priorities. This role involves updating and collaborating with partners, including coalitions, and coordinating with other MRNV departments on various tasks. Responsibilities include managing the endorsement process, informing the communications team on policy messaging, and developing policy through collaboration with the organizing department. This position is based in Northern Nevada during the legislative session, which runs from February 3rd, 2025, to June 2nd, 2025.

Key Responsibilities but not limited to:

  • Conduct thorough research on relevant policy issues, including their impact on Make the Road Nevada members.
  • Prepare written reports, briefs, presentations, and other materials to communicate findings and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of advocacy strategies to advance Make the Road Nevada™s policy priorities.
  • Collaborate with other MRNV departments such as Communications, Organizing and Civic Engagement staff, to coordinate advocacy efforts and support MRNV objectives.
  • Monitor and track policy developments like legislative hearings and votes.
  • Cultivate relationships with policymakers, partner advocacy organizations, industry stakeholders, and others to support coalition-building and advocacy efforts.
  • Support MRNV™s policy priorities by engaging coalition stakeholders and maintaining coalitions and coalition partners informed on appropriate development.
  • Provide support for policy-related events, meetings, and initiatives, including drafting agendas, coordinating logistics, and facilitating discussions as needed.
  • Provide direct support for MRNV lobbying activities including direct lobbying of local, state, and federal elected officials as needed.
  • Develop and maintain an individual work plan, campaign plan, and organizational goals with support from the lead organizer and organizing director.
  • Record and report metrics as part of individual work plans, campaign plans, and organizational goals, ensuring metrics are kept up to date.
  • Coordinate and participate in phonebanking, canvassing, and fieldwork with base organizers.
  • Track and complete grant deliverables related to the position.
  • Drive to community events and other field activities using a personal vehicle.
  • Use personal phones for work-related communication and activities, including texting and phone banking.
  • Work occasional weekends and evenings to support campaign activities, community events, and organizational meetings.
  • Attend events not directly related to the health equity campaign to support the broader work of the organization.
  • Work in the office as required; this is not a work-from-home position, but occasional office presence is necessary.
  • Follow up with hot leads promptly as part of MRNV/MRANV funnel system.

Member Organizing and Leadership Development

  • Recruit and mobilize local community members to become members of MRNV/MRA and be actively involved in the health equity campaign, including attending and participating in meetings, actions, and events.
  • Collaborate with the broader organizing team to plan and run general membership meetings and committee meetings.
  • Help create and conduct trainings, presentations, and workshops centered around the priorities of the organization under MRNV/MRA.
  • Organize and develop informed, confident member-leaders who themselves can recruit, mobilize, and organize others and help lead the housing campaign work.
  • Organize members to fill volunteer roles in the housing committee meeting and put them on a pathway to the MRNA/MRANV leadership ladder.

Foster and Manage Public Relationships

  • Develop and maintain relationships with allied organizations and individuals.
  • Speak about Make the Road work and campaigns in public spaces and to the press and train members to do the same.
  • Represent, advocate, and lobby for MRNV/MRA members in coalition spaces, with elected officials, and government agencies.
  • Support the civic engagement department on meetings to ensure member voices are included with elected officials and candidates.

Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in the US
  • Required to be fully vaccinated with a FDA approved COVID-19 vaccine prior first day of employment.
  • Previous experience in policy analysis, government affairs, advocacy, or a related field is preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to gather, interpret, and synthesize complex information from multiple sources.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Make the Road Nevada’s mission and values.
  • Strong understanding of government processes and institutions at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of policy impacts on immigrant communities.
  • Ability to travel as needed.
  • Have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, community organizing, leadership development and the elevation of directly impacted and marginalized people to create change
  • Bilingual: English-Spanish (written and spoken) is required

Salary and Benefits:

MRStates offers an excellent benefit package including health insurance, 401K, and generous paid vacation, sick, personal days. The salary range for this position is from $58,175 to $78,652
