Ministerial Character:

The Pastor is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the parish (Christ the King Catholic Church - Belton, Texas) which the Bishop has entrusted to him. He makes Christ's mission present and enduring in the parish. In order to fulfill his mission, the Pastor employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them his mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them.

Positions employed at Christ the King Catholic Church - Belton, Texas help to extend the ministry of the Pastor in particular ways as outlined in the job description. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Pastor in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the Church.

Job Summary:

The Director of Religious Education (DRE) works with direction from the Pastor to provide Christian formation, religious education and sacramental preparation to members of the parish faith community. The DRE leads parishioners of all ages to form a love and devotion to their Catholic faith and identity while ensuring that the curriculum, volunteers, and the implementation of all religious education programs support the teachings of the Church and encourage opportunities for involvement in parish life.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Religious Formation - In collaboration with the Pastor, provide overarching direction for Religious Education (grades 1-8), Children's Liturgy of the Word, sacramental programs such as baptism, RCIC, and high school confirmation, adult religious formation programs including bible studies, spiritual development, guest speakers, workshops, RCIA and adult confirmation.
  • Staff and Volunteer Management - Recruit, interview, train, supervise and evaluate staff (Coordinator of Youth Ministry, Religious Education Coordinator, Campus Ministry Coordinator) and volunteers. Ensure EIM compliance for staff and volunteers in religious formation; ensure diocesan reports are submitted as required; coordinate frequently with the Coordinator of Youth Ministry on programs and activities; coordinate with the Religious Education Coordinator(s) on curriculum, programs and activities; issue communications in various forms (mail, email, webpage, phone, etc.) to increase contact and flow of information among all who participate in the programs; develop close communication with mutual support from families; integrate the religious formation programs into the life of the parish community; complement activities of the parish community with religious formation events, activities and programs.
  • Curriculum Development - Incorporate a wide variety of components into curriculum for children, teens and adults: catechesis, evangelization, social action, community building, spirituality, liturgy. Ensure that all curricula for religious formation programs support the teachings of the Catholic Church and the parish mission statement.
  • Spiritual and Professional Growth - Encourage ongoing formation for volunteers and staff members; continue professional development and personal spiritual enrichment, spend time in prayer and adoration daily.
  • Administrative Functions - Develop and/or review the annual budget for the parish's religious formation programs including Religious Formation Grades 1-8, Children's Liturgy of the Word, Sacramental Programs, Adult Religious Formation Programs; timely submit bills and consistently review department expenses; review all parish program calendars to ensure appropriate dates scheduled and no conflicts; collaborate with Coordinator of Youth Ministry, manage parish database.
  • Parish Leadership - Incorporate the parish vision into all religious formation programs; be a positive spokesperson for support of parish decisions including new ministries, parish functions, facility updates, etc.; participate in Faith Formation meetings, monthly pastoral council meetings and staff retreat days; attend meetings as necessary with ministry leaders and other parish leaders; attend parish functions when possible.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church as passed down through tradition, sacred scripture, and the documents of the church, including but not limited to the New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE), the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Code of Canon Law, and Papal Encyclicals.
  • Ability to lead and develop staff, volunteer teams, catechists, students and adults.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and work effectively with staff, clergy, religious and laity.
  • Ability to operate various word-processing software, spreadsheets, and database programs.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and utilize effective time management techniques.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Ability to carry out multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to follow instructions furnished in verbal or written format.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Training

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Religious Education, Theology or equivalent training/experience.
  • At least 2 years' experience; graduate-level coursework in theology/catechesis is a plus.

Catholic Requirement

  • Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Must be certified in Diocese of Austin EIM within 60 days of employment, and maintain certification throughout the employment period.
