Under the direction of the Director of Archives, the Associate Director is responsible for the professional management, maintenance, promotion, and scholarly access to the holdings of the King Library and Archives. The Associate Director refines, implements, and upholds archival policies and procedures with regard to processing, documenting, and accessing its archival holdings.


STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

To promote the appropriate application of archival principles in the preservation, processing, arrangement, and description of materials relevant to the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, The King Center, and the modern Civil Rights Movement.

Requirements:

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In collaboration with the Director of Archives, supervises and trains archives assistants, interns, students, and volunteers.
  • Coordinates and facilitates archives access requests by staff, researchers, research associates, and the public, as well as responding to archives information inquiries and requests
  • Works with Director in preparation of proposals, reports, and other associated documents.
  • Re-house materials in archival quality boxes and folders and prepare select materials for digitization in accordance with preservation procedures for archives and library materials.
  • Provide reference services for scholars, researchers, Intellectual Properties Management, National Parks Services, King Center staff, the King family, Board Members, or other key individuals associated with the King Center
  • Conduct a systematic review of writings and publications on Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Assist with processing, inventorying, cataloging, creating metadata, housing, and digitization of Coretta Scott King and King Center archives.
  • Advocate and represent for KLA in the community by promoting its resources, programs and services.
  • Responsible for archival maintenance.
  • Evaluates and coordinates the re-housing and stabilization of archives.
  • Ensures compliance with government regulations related to archives.
  • Ensures accurate and up-to-date inventories and reconciliation of archives and records, including spot-check inventories.
  • Responsible for the appraisal, arrangement, and description of archival collections according to recognized archives standards (DACS, EAD, Dublin Core)
  • Maintains records of and prioritizes processing backlog.
  • Coordinates the move of archives into new or improved storage conditions.
  • Manages archival policies and procedures
  • Advises the Department in the creation, development, and implementation of collections management policies; archives procedures; procedures manual; departmental goals, and preservation planning.
  • Implements and refines records retention programs in accordance with local, state, and federal law.
  • Conduct training for staff regarding records management and transfer of relevant records to the permanent institutional archives
  • Implement current procedures and develop new procedures for archival collections taking into account previous organizational and cataloging systems
  • Ensures current museum archives handling procedures are recorded and enforced
  • Assist with providing maintenance for the exhibit cases for the King Exhibits at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
  • Assess and/or evaluate new information documents relevant to Dr. King, the King family, or the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Responsible for the negotiation of acquisitions for new collections in consultation with the Senior Director of Archives.
  • Assist with budget oversight and department strategic planning
  • Other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • Master's Degree
  • Educational background in African American History, Social Sciences and/or Political Science, Library Science, or Archival Management
  • Member of American Archival Association
  • Archival certification preferred
  • Ph.D.in History or Archival Studies preferred

Required Knowledge:

  • Understanding the African American experience
  • An advanced knowledge and understanding of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott King, and the modern Civil Rights Movement and related subjects
  • Knowledge of best practices concerning the conservation, arrangement, security, and description of archival collections
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the content and context of the holdings, the African American experience, and the Civil Rights Movement
  • Knowledge of archives preservation requirements, storage needs, and registration procedures for archives
  • Knowledge of professional standards and trends

Experience Required:

  • Experience with professional archives management
  • Ten or more years of professional archival experience is required, with at least 3 years of consecutive experience
  • Four Years+ Supervisory experience

Preferred Minimum Requirements:

  • Familiarity with Archivists' Toolkit

  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated skills and examples of producing informative exhibition projects
  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work collaboratively in a team setting as well as independently
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all professional matters.
  • Assist with special projects as required
  • Must be able to sit, stoop, stand for extended periods of time, lift heavy containers (20 lbs.) and handle fragile items
  • May work in dusty environments
