Position Overview

Introduction:

The Robert W. Woodruff Library of the Atlanta University Center Inc is in search of a dedicated professional to join our team. This full-time, temporary role is centered around a multi-year initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility to the cultural heritage collections of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). As a Mobile Archivist, you will contribute to the HBCU Digital Library Trust project by collaborating with the Archives Research Center and the Digital Services Department.

Key Responsibilities:

In the capacity of a Mobile Archivist, you will be instrumental in evaluating, safeguarding, and overseeing archival materials from HBCU libraries nationwide. Your responsibilities will encompass traveling to various institutions to engage with local library personnel, conducting preservation evaluations, and offering insights on archival methodologies. You will also collaborate closely with the Digitization Project Manager to facilitate the effective digitization of distinctive collections.

Core Duties:

  • Oversee the organization, evaluation, and documentation of archival materials.
  • Travel to HBCUs to evaluate the state of archival items and provide recommendations on secure packaging and shipping methods.
  • Conduct on-site evaluations of collections and execute fundamental preservation and processing tasks.
  • Apply preservation and conservation techniques for delicate materials.
  • Advise on archival best practices and assist with inventory management and material identification.
  • Engage in team discussions and deliver project updates.
  • Perform additional tasks as required.

Qualifications:

  • Proven expertise in archival organization and documentation.
  • Familiarity with preservation and conservation standards applicable to archival collections.
  • Strong organizational skills and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proficiency in archival management software and cataloging systems.
  • Exceptional communication and teamwork skills.
  • Willingness to travel frequently and adapt to diverse working environments.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and effective prioritization of tasks.
  • Experience with standard office applications.

Educational Background:

  • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science or a related discipline.
  • Understanding of African American history and culture is advantageous.
  • Experience in an archival repository or library setting.
