Director of Design

Austin, United States Terry Black s Barbecue LLC Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

Job Summary:

The Director of Design plays a key role in the development of designs ranging from bowling alleys to BBQ operations to high-profile hospitality projects. This position requires experience in high-touch boutique design with a heavy interior influence and exhibits strong technical skills with the ability to contribute to a small but fast-paced, growing team. They will be responsible for overseeing all development and documentation of architectural and interior design concepts, as well as project design management and execution- touching all phases of the design process.

Essential Duties:

  • Act as advocate, critic, translator, and liaison to the BFH board to create a distinctive, place-based, hospitality-forward design with real meaning. Working to shift the process from the interior experience outward, with operations and guests at the center of the work.
  • Regularly meet with in-place architectural teams to ensure the vision is held, feedback is directly and swiftly incorporated, and the project budget is being used in the most effective ways with the greatest impact.
  • Regularly meet with the Owners, the creative vision-holders behind the projects, to quickly and casually pen down feedback into the architectural and interior direction to issue to the larger project teams. This will sometimes be in red-line format or hand sketch, and sometimes be in the form of CAD and Revit / Sketch Up models.
  • Critique and support architectural and design deliverables, lending niche operational and design expertise to multiple projects in concentrated, power-packed sessions.
  • Liaise with clients and project stakeholders, becoming a trusted face of BFH.
  • Assume a leadership role in the growing company, taking accountability for liaising with other departments, and possibly growing the design team in a lean and impactful way.
  • Establish and oversee a digital system for organizing all project files, drawings, presentation decks, meeting notes, submittals, and RFIs.
  • Create digital mood boards, design decks, and informational packages to communicate clear and specific design intents to all external parties. Hold external designers accountable, week over week, for adherence to the design set forth by BFH.
  • Alongside the Director of Development, oversee the project billing and invoices, ensuring that the external design teams are using time efficiently and keeping true to the design intent provided by BFH.
  • Attend regular project team meetings and site visits, ensuring the execution of the design intent.
  • Oversee and occasionally manage procurement for a seamless handoff to production and installation; assist on installations. Manage their work on procurement, freight, claims, and repairs, receiving warehouse, and installation calendar. Create accurate purchase orders, procurement proposals, sales reporting, and provide regular budget updates to the Director of Finance and the Director of Development.
  • Manage Vendor relationships, ensuring BFH projects benefit from best-negotiated trade pricing.
  • Manage material samples and library so all project palettes are organized and available at a glance to project stakeholders. Schedule and manage vendor meetings and showroom visits.
  • Handle coordination of subcontractors, creative partners, and fabricators.
  • Shape all phases of the growth of a new team.

*This represents the core essential tasks of the role; there may be additional tasks required.

*This is a full-time position based in Austin, TX with some remote/hybrid work available and some travel required.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Kind, honest, and have conviction in your design decisions. You punch above your weight class and speak with authority and finality, even when outnumbered.
  • Organized and detail-oriented. You measure twice and cut once.
  • Process-driven, and excited by the prospect of creating a process that is unorthodox, to include the BFH board in all levels of design decisions.
  • Independent. This role needs to work confidently with little oversight.
  • Without ego. You’re not looking to be the lead designer. You see yourself as a translator and advocate, bringing a clear vision from BFH into reality.
  • Efficient with time management and ability to juggle multiple projects in various, simultaneous, phases.
  • Knowledgeable about assembly details, high-end materials, constructability, furniture and textiles, and relevant building codes.
  • Knowledgeable about hospitality design and operations. If it doesn’t work, it’s not a success.
  • Incredibly spatially aware. You should understand daylight conditions, scale, and proportions in any given room.
  • Open to some travel (Domestically, Internationally) and site-based work across Texas.

Qualifications:

  • 8-10 years of experience in the field of Interior Design and/or Architecture.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in architecture or interior architecture.
  • Licensure in architecture or interior design is a plus, but not required.
  • Demonstrated working proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Sketch Up, Adobe Suite, Google Sheets and Docs.
  • The ability to create reliable, beautiful, and organized drawing sets for construction and client presentations.
  • Hand sketching and back-of-napkin detailing.
  • Construction Administration experience, with a heavy outlook toward millwork fabrication and custom furniture details.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a strong email voice.
  • US Residency.
