Job Responsibilities

  • Per project requirements, lead and conduct archeological field efforts meeting BGE and stake holder standards.
  • Provides oversight and leadership for field-based decisions as they pertain to field crew members safety considerations, conflict resolution, and problem solving.
  • Partner with Project Manager in support of the research design and project execution.
  • Project acquisition planning, including proposal development, budgeting, scoping, and scheduling of project tasks.
  • Monitor tracking of field effort progress, provide feedback on time constraints and/or staffing needs, modifies field techniques and recording procedures as necessary.
  • Manage field logistics, staffing, and coordination of field effort: in preparation of GPS unit set-up and operation, field maps, and field forms; crew member scheduling and crew member assignments; acquisition and scheduling of field vehicles; and monitoring maintenance of company vehicles, maintenance of field equipment, project equipment distribution, and BGE field equipment inventories.
  • Coordinate effectively with Field Director, Crew Chiefs, and crew members in support of project field efforts according to local, state and Federal historic preservation guidelines for reconnaissance surveys, terrestrial surveys augmented by shovel testing, site documentation and recordation, mitigation, and monitoring.
  • Perform overland navigation using compass and tape, in addition to orienteering through interpretation of USGS topographic maps and aerial photographic imagery.
  • Instruct Field Directors on proper methods of field inventory and provide verbal and/or written instruction for specific tasks that they and/or field crew members are required to perform according to the project scope of work.
  • Provide leadership for field-based decisions as they pertain to field crew members’ safety considerations, conflict resolution, and problem solving.
  • Complete and submit requisite field paperwork: daily safety forms, daily journals, transect shovel test forms, site shovel test forms, and state-level site and feature forms; draft field site sketch maps and feature profiles, perform photo-documentation and complete photo logs, etc.
  • Review field data (safety forms, daily journals, survey forms, Trimble data, site forms and site sketch maps, photographs and photologs, etc.) and conduct QA/QC of all field data submitted by Field Director, Crew Chiefs and crew members. This includes but is not limited to daily linear and/or block survey progress updates, parcel/tract clearance, site revisits, newly recorded sites, as well as project constraints such as access issues, and staff performance reports.

Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in anthropology, archeology or closely related field and current Register of Professional Archeologists (RPA) registration.
  • Minimum of 5 years documented field experience in archeology; plus 2 years documented supervisory (Project Archaeologist level) and project management experience.
  • Firm understanding of local, state-level and Federal regulatory compliance requirements governing Cultural Resource Management (CRM), including working with Section 106 of the NRHP, NEPA, ARPA, and NAGPRA. This includes but is not limited to field surveys, testing, mitigation, monitoring and/or report writing. Regional experience specific to Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas with proficient knowledge of state laws
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS software or similar GIS Platform is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to utilize Trimble GPS, Pathfinder, Terra Sync, and Google Earth, and ability to instruct crew members how to operate mapping devices quickly and effectively.
  • Proficiency in Trimble and Total Station data collection is required.
  • Ability to accurately and effectively perform QAQC of technical reports, regulatory correspondence, and client communications.
  • Demonstrated experience communicating with regulatory Agencies, clients, and landowners.
  • Familiar with prehistoric and/or historic artifact analysis, laboratory procedures, and equipment highly preferred.
  • Ability to travel and conduct daily fieldwork for extended periods (crews typically work 10-hour days for duration of field effort, with exception of travel days.
  • Ability to work through rugged terrain and shovel test at prescribed intervals up to 10-miles a day while carrying appropriate field equipment weighing up to 40 lbs.
