Job Objective:


To provide support to families involved in the Whole Village Case Management, Kinship navigation program in compliance with the agency’s policies applicable contracts. The primary focus is to provide supports to strengthen families, prevent child abuse and neglect, increase the protective factors, provide information, referral and assistance to empower families to be successful in reaching their identified goals. The Family Support Specialist will also provide group parenting education, playgroup and assist with other duties as assigned.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Functions in a collaborative way within the structure of the family respecting any cultural, religious, or values-based differences.
  • Provides families guidance in their homes through health and parenting education, curriculum, information, referrals and support.
  • Assists families in maintaining, strengthening and safeguarding the health and well-being of their children.
  • Assesses strengths and concerns using a variety of assessment tools and assist families to enhance their strengths.
  • Develops Family Support Plans to address individual and family goals.
  • Supports families in making choices, assisting them in achieving their goals.
  • Assists in accessing services and acquiring skills to fulfill the action plan by maintaining regular contact with each family through home visits and phone calls.
  • Refers to appropriate community resources.
  • Conducts him/herself in a professional manner and in accordance with the Principles of Family Support.
  • Exercises initiative and judgment in the performance of duties and recognizes the limits of his/her responsibilities.
  • Maintains and completes required documentation of services provided and participates in reflective supervision.
  • Participates in all required meetings, approved and required in-house trainings and outside conferences.
  • Functions in a collaborative role with the family/individual’s support network.
  • Functions within the policies and procedures established for Granite United Way and Whole Village family resource center.
  • Performs other such duties as assigned.


Education, Experience and Skills Required:


  • Minimum of an Associate's degree in Social Work, Human Services, Counseling, Early Childhood Education or closely related field.
  • Knows and supports the philosophical base of Family Support Services and is able to communicate such to families and others in the community.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to recognize and set appropriate boundaries with families and individuals.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and non-judgmental demeanor with families.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with family and all individuals involved in the family’s life.
  • Ability to maintain open, respective and effective communication with family members.
  • Knowledge of child development and behavior as appropriate.
  • Seeks assistance from supervisor and co-workers when/where appropriate.
  • Communicates effectively with the family and the Family Resource Center staff, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to facilitate meaningful community connection.
  • Ability to pass a background check.


Environment:


This position is primarily based in a general office environment that is clean, well-lighted, environmentally comfortable, free of fumes or airborne particles, and only minimally exposes employees to office solvents limited to those relative to copier equipment.


This position requires the ability to:

  • Minimal requirement to reach at or above shoulder level; occasional reaching below shoulder level required.
  • Hand manipulation - equipment and controls, frequent; grasping and handling, occasional lifting.
  • Ability to travel throughout the territory required.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, which may include night and weekends.
  •  Ability to tolerate prolonged sitting and/or standing and to lift up to approximately 25 pounds to waist high level whenever necessary.
  • Mobility includes regular sitting, some standing and walking.
