Avalon Housing is a non-profit supportive housing provider. Supportive housing is a combination of affordable housing paired with services, such as case management. We don't just help people find housing, we help people stay and thrive in their homes.

Support Coordinators collaborate with community partners to coordinate delivery of a broad range of services that meet the mental, physical, psycho-social and housing needs of our clients, either through direct service or connections to appropriate resources. In addition, Outreach Support Coordinators work with partner agencies and private landlords to help individuals secure affordable and safe housing.

Paid Time Off

Paid time off includes three weeks of vacation time plus additional sick and personal time allowances. There is also an extra paid holiday every month

Full-time employees can choose from three different medical insurance plans with dental, vision, and prescription coverage, including an option with no per-payroll premium contribution, even for families Your personal annual deductible is capped at $1,000.

Life and Disability Plans All staff working more than 16 hours per week are given Life insurance and Short- and Long-Term Disability plans, with Avalon covering the premium cost.

403(b) Retirement Plan Avalon sponsors a 403(b) retirement plan through Vanguard, available to all employees.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Proactively seek out rental housing and build new relationships with prospective landlords; maintain current landlord relationships
  • Assertively locate, outreach, and engage individuals on the streets, in shelters, ERs, or other outlying/non-traditional settings
  • Oversee FUSE/HUD recertification process
  • Oversee FUSE/HUD HQS inspections
  • Assist clients with applying for housing assistance/voucher resources
  • Provide direct case management and/or coordinate with case managers in the community to provide continuity of service for tenants/clients:
    • Ongoing, active outreach to tenants/clients
    • Comprehensive tenant assessments and action plans to achieve goals
    • Ongoing case management for clients, including maintenance of clinical records and progress notes
    • Collaboration with property management to coordinate eviction prevention efforts
    • Provide crisis intervention as needed
    • Assist tenants with accessing needed medical, mental health, substance use, and psychosocial supports
    • Assist tenants in developing basic life skills including maintaining an apartment
    • Provide budgeting/financial literacy support
    • Link tenants to employment and skill development opportunities
    • Build community and peer support among tenants including participation in community programming activitie
  • Meet all lease, compliance and documentation requirements as dictated by program need
  • Effectively build relationships with local community and external agencies

Supplemental Job Duties:

  • Participate in on-call rotation and occasional evening and weekend work as necessary
  • Attend staff meetings, retreats and professional training sessions
  • Assist tenants as needed with activities of daily living

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelors or Master's degree in a social or behavioral science or relevant field or three years of relevant experience
  • Experience working with people who are homeless, people with mental illness, chronic health issues, and/or addiction disorders, or similar populations

  • Skilled in crisis response situations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Positive and enthusiastic attitude and strong commitment toward helping those in need
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Interest and experience in working with individuals who are difficult to engage and refer to traditional programs, ability to engage with individuals in their current stage of change. Experience with or acceptance of harm reduction principles

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to sit for long periods of time, drive a vehicle with passengers, communicate with other persons by talking and hearing, be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds, and to operate computer hardware systems. A valid Michigan driver's license and reliable transportation are required. You may be required to transport clients in your personal vehicle.

Starting Wage: $49, 009/year

Schedule: 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, plus on-call
