External Affairs - Communications specialist

Location: Los Angeles, California - 100% Onsite

If you are passionate about serving the community and communities of color, then this is the right role for you Crystal Stairs is looking to hire a Communications Specialist responsible for curating communications content: Everything from story-telling, social media posts, to developing e-blasts. The right person for this role is a talented writer, who can tell compelling stories with ease and effectiveness. This role is also tasked with tracking campaign analytics and maintaining digital media archives. The Communications Specialist will report directly to the External Affairs Coordinator, which is a cross-functional team of three verticals: Marketing Communications, Public Relations, and Social Media/Community Engagement.

A bachelor's degree in communications or journalism is preferred, but not required. Prior experience creating digital content and managing communications campaigns is required and a writing sample must be submitted with your application to be considered for this position. Strong writing and analytical skills are the most essential qualifications for this role. Successful candidates exemplify superior time management skills, work well under quick deadlines, are creative thinkers, and can work well in a team setting or independently.

Key Responsibilities for Communication Specialist

Marketing and Communications

  • Review all initial requests for marketing materials and social media posts to ensure all request meet branding guidelines
  • Create and design marketing materials for approval
  • Perform various administrative tasks as assigned including data entry and editing to marketing and various databases
  • Answer e-mail messages from website inquiries
  • Create content for e-communications and assist in photography, production and distribution.
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of agency calendar of events
  • Assist in writing and proofreading copy
  • Suggest copy, images and ideas for social media for approval
  • Weekly and/or daily posting to the organization's social media accounts

Public Relations Assistance

  • Conduct research on press outlets that cover topics related to the work done at Crystal Stairs
  • Assist in writing and proofreading press releases
  • Research various resources and partnerships to secure marketing and promotional opportunities for Crystal Stairs, Inc.

Social Media Posting

  • Research and provide suggested copy, images and ideas for social media schedule to be approved by Communications Coordinator (including ideas for fund development, events, public policy and general)
  • Weekly and/or daily posting to the organization's social media accounts as assigned and approved

Qualifications, Skills, Education, and Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in a communications role (Bachelor Degree in Communications, Journalism a plus)
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, specializing in storytelling
  • Solid knowledge and comfort with social media tools and best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions and implement feedback
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite; Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is a MUST
  • Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and Canva a plus
