Duty Schedule:

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. May require evenings and/or weekend hours. This is grant-funded position. The position requires working on-site.

Summary/Objective of Position:

The FYE Specialist is responsible for advising First-Year students/prospective students at the community campuses/centers. The Specialist aids in the development of innovative programs and services to increase student persistence and retention of incoming first-year students. The First Year Experience provides: orientation, academic/learning workshops, and co-curricular activities. The position requires the ability to initiate programs independently, possess a positive & motivational attitude, and nurturing/supportive skills.

ACADEMIC ADVISING & COACHING, (60%)
- Provide guidance & support to First-time Freshman and continuing Freshmen students with registration, course selection, degree planning, review/read degree checklists; assist with explaining and completing an official add/drop and/or withdrawal procedures,
- Guide students with selecting an academic pathway/degree planning; develop an educational plan to promote higher education goal attainment that includes discussion on academic, personal, and career goals,
- Network with the Student Affairs' programs in initiating, implementing, and monitoring retention contracts with freshman year students attending Tuba City, Window Rock, & Crownpoint campuses/centers who are placed on academic "at risk" status,
- Conduct follow-ups regularly with assigned advisees throughout the semester to track academic progress at week one, week three, mid-term, and finals to monitor students' academic success and advancement,
- Collaborate and refer students to various student support resources and academic departments as needed (i.e. faculty),
- Maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, staff, and faculty per FERPA requirements and College policies.

STUDENT SUPPORT/FYE LITERACY PROGRAMS, (20%)
- Assist with the development & implementation of innovative and strategic first-year programming that assists with transition and retention of freshman students,
- Coordinate and collaborate on New Student Orientation with the Recruitment Office to broadcast orientation across all campuses/centers via in-person and virtual settings; develop an orientation module using the most recent applicable technology,
- Coordinate and host extra-curricular activities to supplement academic needs for all first year students; conduct workshops that promotes college success skills including time management, acknowledged learning needs, stress management, financial literacy, test-taking strategies, financial aid information, and goal setting,
- Responsible for efficient delivery and marketing of all First Year Experience programs and services to all incoming and current first year students,
- Collaborate and maintain partnerships with academic departments, and other student support services to build the first-year program and services to better support students academically.

ASSESSMENT AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, (15%)
- Implement, maintain, and manage electronic records of student surveys, data reports, and other first year experience activities,
- Monitor the progression and contribution with Student Learning Outcomes, Institutional Strategic Goals, Student Affairs Goals, and Title III Goals, recommend program initiatives to align when necessary,
- Actively participate in staff development initiatives and remain knowledgeable about best practices with first year experience programming on behalf of students.
- Prepare documents, reports, and routine correspondences in a timely manner; collect student data and provide information accordingly; promote and used data-driven decision making.
- Other Duties as assigned for the overall success of the department as assigned by the supervisor. (5%)

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience


Minimum:

Associate degree in Business, Education social/behavioral science, or related field, plus two years of experience working with students in a Higher Education Setting.

Preferred:

Bachelors degree in Business, Education, Social/behavioral science, or related field.

- Ability to interact in a professional manner with staff, students, and the public,
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills,
- Independent decision making and problem-solving abilities,
- Display professional appearance and demeanor,
- Knowledge with promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity with program planning and interaction with students.

Skills:

- Proficient skills with Microsoft Office: i.e. Excel, Pivot Tables, etc.
- Must have strong project management and organizational skills,
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills; display active listening and interpersonal skills,
- Work effectively in team oriented program planning,
- Display excellent customer service skills using tact and diplomacy.

Abilities:

- Ability to compile, analyze and interpret data,
- Ability to prioritize program planning and distribution of information in a timely manner,
- Ability to communicate clearly by phone and in-person,
- Detail oriented and able to organize and manage multiple projects while maintaining a high level of accuracy,
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and issues during high peak time, i.e. Registration,
- Ability to understand and explain technical information in a manner that is easily understood.

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

Work is typically done in an office work environment. Required to lift typical office equipment and supplies weighing 25 lbs. Travel is required to other campuses and centers; required to use GSA vehicles. Air travel maybe required to attend training, conferences, and seminars locally and/or nationally.

Other Requirement(s):

Possess a valid state issued Driver's License. Complete Highway Safety training to operate government vehicles. Attend/complete First Aid & CPR training. This is a grant-funded position. The position requires working on-site.
