We are seeking a talented and versatile Marketing & Communications Writer to join our Marketing, Communications, and External Relations team at New England Conservatory (NEC). The Marketing Content Specialist will be responsible for creating compelling written content across various platforms, with a focus on enhancing NEC’s marketing and communication efforts. The ideal candidate is a creative and concise writer with a strong understanding of SEO principles and the ability to adapt their writing style to different mediums. This role will involve collaboration with various departments and play a crucial role in enhancing NEC's presence and brand awareness through online and traditional channels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Write engaging news articles by identifying and researching topics, and conducting interviews.

  • Write original content features, reports, print materials, digital ads, promotional campaigns, and web content that resonate with the NEC community and wider audience, ensuring alignment with NEC's brand voice and messaging.

  • Develop and execute email marketing communications, including the weekly Music Monday newsletter, pre-concert emails, admissions emails, and others as needed.

  • Maintain an editorial calendar for news stories, the weekly Music Monday newsletter, social media, the website, and other channels. Collaborate with other departments to ensure the calendar is appropriately populated.

  • Incorporate SEO best practices into web content to optimize search engine visibility.

  • Serve as the in-house copy editor for NEC, maintaining a consistent tone, voice, and quality across published pieces as needed and serving as the resident expert on NEC’s editorial style guidelines.

  • Develop captions and content for social media and collaborate with the Digital Content Coordinator to review the social calendar weekly to ensure consistent tone and voice.

  • Support sourcing and recommending media for written digital properties, including attending events and performances, interviewing subjects, and observing classes.

  • Adapt content for length to suit distribution across the website, newsletters, social media, and other channels.

  • Collaborate with the Admissions team to create written pieces for brochures, advertisements, emails, flyers, and other marketing collateral.

  • Ensure that admissions materials effectively communicate NEC's unique value proposition and offerings.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Participate in meetings with students, alumni, faculty, and staff to source editorial content.

  • Act as a key collaborator in strategic content development and planning.

  • Oversee freelance writing consultants, including distributing assignments.

  • Support research of competitors and market trends as needed.

  • Assist in external consultant relationship management, as needed.

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Marketing, or a related field.

  • 3-5 years of proven experience in writing for various mediums, including web, email, print, and reports.

  • Strong SEO skills and familiarity with keyword research tools.

  • Experience with email marketing tools, including Mailchimp.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a keen eye for detail.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and meet deadlines.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Commitment to NEC’s values of cultural equity and belonging

  • Passion for music and an understanding of the arts and higher education is a plus.

  • Experience with Slate CRM is a plus.
