The maternity care office nurse acts as coordinator and liaison of care primarily between the ante/postpartum patient and physicians. Utilizing clinical judgment, knowledge, critical thinking and experience directs communication with the patient and is guided in assessment, planning and intervention regarding the urgency of patient's symptoms/needs from instruction for self-care/self-management to escalation with high priority to the physician. The maternity care office nurse serves as a liaison, educator, health counselor and patient advocate for maternity care and newborn care. This position will also require care/management of other patient populations (pediatrics to geriatrics) as seen in clinic.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
  • Functions as a role model for organizational values.
  • Delivers nursing interventions to assigned patients that are consistent with stated medical plan of care utilizing the nursing process to assess, implement, and record patient response in the medical record.
  • Analyze the assessment date to determine the diagnoses or issues.
  • Schedules patients' appointments, tests and procedures through registration or by telephone and reinforces physician instructions in person and through telephone contact.
  • Provides patient education for ante and postpartum care.
  • Provides assessment and education of new mothers on care of self, signs and symptoms of postpartum depression, breastfeeding and newborn care.
  • Ensures appropriate patient consents and authorizations are obtained for medical treatments.
  • Triage patient phone inquiries according to physician and/or departmental protocols and documents such actions in medical record.
  • Develop community resource list and support services, coordinating referrals and follow up according to need and plan of care.
  • Assists with collection of data for nursing or resident/physician P.I. projects.
  • Provides working supervision and delegates tasks to licensed vocational nurses and medical assistants or office support staff.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in electronic medical record documentation.
  • Participates in the recommendation of policy and/or procedural changes according to nursing expertise.
  • Prepares equipment and assists physicians during physical exams and medical procedures. Prepares and administers medications as prescribed by physician.
  • Inspects equipment and facilities visually and physically to ensure patient safety and proper functioning of equipment. Maintains adequate stock of supplies as required for work area.
  • Practices within the scopes and standards of practice set forth by the American Nurses Association.
  • Practices within the scopes and standards set forth by professional organizations specific to specialty.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
