Position Title: Safety & Compliance Director

Role Summary


Our Safety & Compliance Director role will be a part of the HR team. You will be responsible for directing and managing all aspects of safety and compliance within our organization. Your role is important because you keep our team members and others safe, and you empower people with the knowledge and skills to maintain their health and well-being, creating an overall positive environment.


Your day-to-day tasks will include developing and implementing safety and compliance programs, conducting audits and inspections, ensuring regulatory compliance, analyzing data to identify areas for improvement, and collaborating with various departments to create a culture of safety and compliance.


You will develop, evaluate, and oversee policies and procedures; direct and coordinate safety training activities and programs that ensure a safe workplace - including safety orientations, skills training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment, and investigate safety violations and accidents for fuel distribution, construction, and service sectors.


Additionally, the Safety & Compliance Director implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents, and exposure to long-term health hazards.


Qualifications

  • BS degree in Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, or Health and Safety preferred.
  • At least 5 years of related experience and/or a combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive OSHA Guidelines knowledge base.
  • Experience with the fuel industry preferred.
  • Proficient in software tools such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Analytical Skills and ability to interpret data
  • Ability to deal tactfully with personnel issues with colleagues and customers.
  • Ability to create and maintain cooperative and collaborative team-building relationships.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Willingness to “roll up your sleeves” and do what is necessary to get the job done.
  • Legal Compliance knowledge and understanding of relevant regulations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills

Duties and Responsibilities


Leadership and Management

  1. Serves as a member of the senior leadership team.
  2. Lead Corporate Safety Committee.
  3. Acts as chief advisor on safety and safety training issues.
  4. Ensure safety meetings are scheduled and attended on a regular basis, at least 4 per year, for each of the major operational departments.
  5. Coordinates safety training activities with Department Managers.
  6. Communicate regularly with senior management on the progress of programs and areas needing attention.
  7. Promotes and encourages team member participation in continuous improvement activities for safety.
  8. Seeks out ways to improve training and company systems to raise levels of awareness for safety amongst all team members.
  9. Develops and maintains safety policies and procedures for each major function in the company in order to prepare our workforce to complete their job functions in a safe manner.

Safety

  1. Accountable for operational and safety training, safety performance, and compliance with DOT, OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies.
  2. Monitors CSA scores and relevant FMCSA regulations and actively manages safety and compliance processes for continuous improvement.
  3. Provides President with monthly Safety reporting and trend analysis.
  4. Regularly monitors operations to ensure staff members comply with policies and procedures, safety rules, and government regulations.
  5. Develops, trains, and ensures the enforcement of company policies and procedures.
  6. Promotes safe work activities by conducting safety audits, coordinating, and leading department safety meetings, and meeting with individual staff members as needed.
  7. Conducts investigations in cooperation with government agencies to determine causes of transportation accidents, incidents, and injuries and to improve safety procedures.
  8. Conducts initial Hazardous Materials Control and Security training with new team members and reviews the Hazardous Materials Control and Security Plan with existing team members with the re-occurring HAZMAT awareness training.
  9. Establish and implement fuel quality assurance programs.
  10. Monitors and reviews alerts and events from vehicle camera systems and communicates with the appropriate Division Managers to give the information needed to correct driver behaviors.
  11. Actively seeks out ideas for improvements to safety training and safety programs from all team members.
  12. Performs ride-a-longs with newly trained drivers, and with experienced drivers periodically, to evaluate current levels of safety awareness and adherence to company safety policies and procedures.
  13. Reinforces the importance of pre-trip and post-trip procedures with drivers and trains drivers on what to expect during a roadside DOT inspection.
  14. Performs periodic inspections of propane tank installations to verify code compliance and adherence to E & V Energy's propane tank installation standards.

Environmental Compliance

  1. Oversees environmental compliance of company facilities.
  2. Manage 3rd party environmental consulting firm activities related to site assessments, regulatory compliance, remediation, and reporting.
  3. Reviews monthly fuel inventory reconciliations and investigates anomalies as warranted.

Human Resources

  1. Review OSHA form 300 to ensure that injuries/illnesses are reported correctly and that form 300A is posted on required dates.
  2. Reviews and inspects Workplace Safety Inspection Forms and performs the inspections from time to time to look for discrepancies.
  3. Ensures HR Assistant maintains the OSHA safety log and other administrative requirements related to safety operations and regulations.
  4. Arrange and coordinate the Annual Driver Safety Day including preparing the agenda and arranging for guest speakers and/or trainers.
  5. Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the company's safety policies and procedures.
  6. Responsible for the administration of the Drug/Alcohol testing program.
  7. Administer and monitor the Supervision License Monitor Program.
  8. Investigate vehicle accidents, personal property damage incidents, petroleum spills, and personal injury accidents and report findings to senior management.
  9. Administers required initial and re-occurring HAZMAT awareness training.
  10. Provide job assessments to establish appropriate PPE.
  11. Schedule regular vehicle checks for First Aide & Safety and Blood Borne Pathogens Kits – fully stocked and up to date.
  12. Provide OSHA compliance training.

Administration

  1. Update and maintain Department Safety Manuals
  2. Track Safety certifications within departments.
  3. Inspects driver files at least once a year to ensure files are maintained properly by Department Managers and up to date for all company drivers.
  4. Generates and uses relevant reporting methods for tracking and monitoring results.
  5. Special projects as assigned.
