Summary/Objective

The primary responsibility of this position is to oversee and administer the company’s claims and damage prevention programs.

Essential Functions

  • Manage the Company's claims and damage prevention programs.
  • Provide assistance and guidance to the organization to mitigate claims risk and provides technical damage prevention support and information to production and corporate personnel.
  • Identify common claim and damage issues and formulate policies and procedures to resolve the identified issues. Institute and facilitate best practice sharing amongst the various operating units in the Company.
  • Develop and manage a robust damage prevention awareness program including internal audits and training where appropriate.
  • Develop SOP’s and procedures for damage prevention and claims control and deploy systems to measure and monitor reporting to terminals and leadership on progress.
  • Ensure that regulatory changes and updates (AAR, AIAG, VEQ and OEM) are obtained, reviewed and implemented through bulletins, notices, manuals, Operating Rules, job briefings and training.
  • Provide guidance and support to Managers and Supervisors and act as a resource on claims and damage issues. Provide regulatory reports to the management team and customers as required.
  • Coordinate with the finance, operations, safety and engineering organizations to ensure claims are effectively managed. Interface with all departments on claim and damage investigations and resolutions.
  • Coordinate responses to OEM/railroad claim investigations and coordinate with designated internal and/or external legal representatives.
  • Manage handling of any claims and act as liaison with OEM’s, railroads, leadership and attorneys.
  • Oversees administration of claim programs.
  • Conduct, develop and/or coordinate training in areas such as damage prevention and regulations and use of securement equipment.
  • Conduct, facilitate, and review internal audits to ensures compliance with OEM, AAR, AIAG, VEQ and company regulations.
  • Promote safety and damage prevention awareness through internal company memoranda, newsletters and training programs.

Competencies

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of damage prevention management.
  • Ability to effectively analyze factors concerning damage and claim liability.
  • Ability to identify and resolve claims and systemic damage concerns.
  • Knowledge of AAR and AIAG regulations related to areas of responsibility.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with OEM’s, AAR/TTCI, rail car securement vendors, and employees.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct reports.

Work Environment

Well-lighted, heated, and/or air-conditioned indoor office, production setting, outdoor/indoor shop environment, or enclosed vehicle with adequate ventilation and protection from extreme weather conditions.

Physical Demands

Medium physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities of an administrative or production/technical nature. Manual dexterity is sufficient to reach and handle items.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are primarily 8 hours each day, Monday through Friday on a day shift. This position often requires overtime.

Travel

Occasional overnight travel (up to 40%) by land and/or air.

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma; and 1+ years related experience in claims and damage prevention management.

Preferred Education and Experience

College credits; and experience with rail transit or rail transportation experience would be an asset

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Must be able to obtain TWIC badge (Transportation Working Identification Credential) and eRailSafe certification.
